In sports, some of the most memorable moments are often times goals or celebrations but by some, the moments that are celebrated the most are the first steps back on the field after a long-term injury. 

Injuries are the unfortunate and unexpected side of sports but when something happens that sidelines an athlete for an extended period of time, Dr. Cassandra Lee is there.

Injuries are the unfortunate and unexpected side of sports but when something happens that sidelines an athlete for an extended period of time, Dr. Cassandra Lee is there. 

Dr. Lee is an Orthopedic Surgeon at UC Davis Health where she is also the Director of the Residency Program. She’s also an Associate Professor and recognized throughout the entirety of the UCDH family and greater Sacramento region.

Originally from California, her studies took her to the Northeast where she attended Boston University before she continued her education at Wake Forest University in North Carolina followed by the prestigious Washington University in Saint Louis. Alongside the entire Republic FC sports medicine staff, Dr. Lee has helped a number of Republic FC players get back onto the field following an injury. But the feeling of helping a player return to the game they love is always the same – unbridled joy for the athlete.

“The field is a stereotype field, big jocks that can wield a bunch of power tools – so I think that’s why there’s so few women in here,” Dr. Lee said. “But I think I’ve been so fortunate on my path to have mentors who would say ‘of course you can do this’. That started in medical school, I had an amazing mentor who gave me my first opportunity in a lab to take a project, learn what I could from it, and grow it – and that was the first time I believed ‘I could do this, this is amazing’."

Seeing more women in her field is something she’s adamant about pushing for and she has an unlimited amount of advice for those women who want nothing more than a profession in medicine. 

“You can do whatever you set your mind to, there really is no limit. There really isn’t,” Dr. Lee said. “We want and need more women surgeons, we encourage that. You just have to know physics and know where things bend. You don’t have to hit it harder, hit it smarter.”

This Saturday, Sacramento travels to Utah to take on MLS side Real Salt Lake at noon in SRFC’s first test of the preseason. The match will be open to fans in a limited capacity. RSL finished the 2020 Major League Soccer season in 11th place in the Western Conference – eight points shy of sealing a spot in the postseason. The club did manage to advance to the knockout stage of the MLS is Back Tournament in July before falling 5-2 to San Jose Earthquakes.

Roots boasts a pair of familiar faces – both on the pitch and on the sideline – as former SRFC striker Tyler Blackwood recently joined Roots SC and former Republic FC Youth Academy Coach Jordan Farrell is Oakland’s Technical Director. The boys in Old Glory Red will also be the visitors for Oakland’s first-ever league home opener during Championship play on Saturday, June 19. 

Last but certainly not least, Republic FC will return home for preseason play on April 24 when the club will not only welcome Real Monarchs to town for a noon friendly, but fans will be welcome to attend the match as well. Upon approval, SRFC will open select seating exclusively to Indomitable Members.

On this week’s episode of The Breakaway podcast, new Republic FC signee Tucker Bone joins host Connor Sutton for a chat following a recent Training Camp session. The two dive into Tucker’s early experiences with the club as preparations continue for the 2021 season.

On this week’s episode of The Breakaway podcast, new Republic FC signee Tucker Bone joins host Connor Sutton for a chat following a recent Training Camp session. The two dive into Tucker’s early experiences with the club as preparations continue for the 2021 season.

Bone signed with Sacramento this past offseason and he talked about the excitement in playing for a club that is where he considers home and what it means for him to be able to compete for the Republic.

“Everybody is really excited. I was reached out to by old friends from the Sacramento-area,” Bone says. “I have been hearing through my parents that family-friends that are very excited to have me, who maybe have been to Sac Republic games in the past.”

Bone signed with Sacramento this past offseason and he talked about the excitement in playing for a club that is where he considers home and what it means for him to be able to compete for the Republic.

“Everybody is really excited. I was reached out to by old friends from the Sacramento-area,” Bone says. “I have been hearing through my parents that family-friends that are very excited to have me, who maybe have been to Sac Republic games in the past.”

Fresh off the field from training, Tucker was able to give his insights on how the culture of the team has already become a factor early on during training camp with the 2021 season ahead.

“Coming in this week after doing this for a while, there are a few things I need to be focused on,” Bone says. “One of them is the team and developing those relationships early on is very important and it’s a part of the culture that Mark wants.”

Tucker also discussed the focus that it takes coming into training camp that gives him the best opportunity to be successful and how that can impact his play on the field.
