Since the club’s inaugural season, Republic FC players, fans and staff have participated in the St. Baldrick’s Day fundraiser hosted by Keaton’s Child Cancer Alliance, raising money for childhood cancer research.
This year will be just as impactful as previous campaigns with Republic FC midfielder Drew Skundrich and goalkeeper Adam Grinwis willing to brave the shave for the annual event. Skundrich set a goal of $100 to raise for the fundraiser and as of Sunday over $1,100 has been raised.
“It’s a really great cause. The people that are affected by childhood cancer and their families, they need support,” Republic FC midfielder Drew Skundrich said. “The people that are affected by it, they need someone to stand by them and show them that they are not alone in the process. I think doing this shows support and shows to those impacted that everyone is here with you.”
And for some players, a cause like this has a direct impact on someone very close to them. Just like Grinwis who played with a young goalkeeper that went through chemo treatment while the two were together with Orlando City SC.
"It has always meant a lot to me to be involved in fundraisers for a tremendous cause, just like St. Baldrick's," Republic FC goalkeeper Adam Grinwis said. "There are a lot of people direct affected by childhood cancer and whatever we can do as a community to come together and help out and give back, that's something I always want to be a part of."
The young shot-stopper is now in remission and not only are the two 'keepers still close friends, but Grinwis continues to mentor the young player.
Fans are encouraged to donate to the cause directly by visiting Drew's donation page at St. Baldrick's.org. The donation page for Adam can be found here at St.Baldricks.org as well. The fundraiser will run from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. PT at de Vere’s Irish Pub – 1521 L Street.
Joining Skundrich and Grinny for the shave will be members of the Tower Bridge Battalion and additional Republic FC supporters.
“It’s a great cause and it was something I really wanted to be a part of this year,” Skundrich said.
