Playoff soccer is coming back to the Capital City as Republic FC takes down the Western Conference leader on the road on Saturday night. The Indomitable Club secured a top-four seed in the Playoffs with a 1-0 win over El Paso Locomotive FC, setting a new club record with its 12th consecutive undefeated result.
After a fairly even first half, Republic FC took control of the match after the break and found the game-winner in the 87th minute as Mark-Anthony Kaye set up an upper 90 finish from Memo Rodriguez. In between the sticks, Danny Vitiello posted a four-save performance to earn the team’s 10th clean sheet of the season.
Locomotive had an early chance in the third minute as Ricky Ruiz whipped in a cross that was headed on target by Golden Boot leader Rubio Rubin. But Danny Vitiello was positioned perfectly at the near post to punch the ball out.
Sacramento had its first go at goal in the 12th minute. Mayele Malango took control of a misplayed El Paso clearance and connected with Cal Jennings for a one-two that set up Malango for a shot from the edge of the six-yard box. Even after a deflection by the goalkeeper, the well-struck ball continued toward the target, forcing a goalline clearance by a defender.
Another close call came in the 21st minute when Michel Benitez threaded a pass to Cal Jennings who was in on goal. The keeper came off his line to make the tackle, but after a collision just inside the box, the ball popped out for a corner.
El Paso would get another chance just before halftime as Alex Mendez put a free kick through the wall, but Danny Vitiello saw it the whole way through and easily made the save. Republic FC responded with its own chance moments later when Memo Rodriguez lofted a cross to Mayele Malango, who had outjumped two defenders to get his head on the ball, but unfortunately the attempt narrowly missed the target.
Republic FC came out on the other side of the break and continued to wear El Paso down as the match progressed. A cheeky spin move by Alfredo Midence set up the midseason acquisition for a dangerous cross in the 73rd minute. The initial ball was out of reach for Kyle Edwards, but the defender only got it as far as an unmarked Cal Jennings who put a one-touch shot over the bar.
Mark-Anthony Kaye subbed on in the 82nd minute — his first appearance since an injury in Tulsa on August 5 — and changed the game. The veteran midfielder took on four El Paso players to lay off a pass to Memo Rodriguez, who had enough time in the box to control the ball and release a shot that found the upper 90.
With one game remaining and three teams within reach of the top spot in the west, tonight’s win sets the stage for an exciting regular season finale at home against NorCal rival Oakland Roots on October 24. That match kicks off from Heart Health Park at 7:00 p.m. and tickets are available now at SacRepublicFC.com.
Republic FC’s Western Conference Quarterfinal match is set to be played at Heart Health Park on Sunday, November 1 and tickets will go on sale this Monday at 10:00 a.m. The team’s opponent and kickoff time will be confirmed at the conclusion of the regular season.
