It’s been a busy week for Sacramento Republic FC with MLS Commissioner Don Garber visiting Sacramento, the club hosted a giant Block Party and Head Coach and Technical Director Paul Buckle and his wife Rebecca Lowe are eagerly expecting the birth of their son, but the team has one priority: winning—one match at a time.
“We’re very focused on getting it done in the USL this season,” said forward Cameron Iwasa to The Sacramento Bee. “This is what is in the forefront.”
For Republic FC players, Thursday’s Block Party was a fantastic opportunity to meet with fans and celebrate.
“It was an amazing opportunity to show the very top guy what it’s like here,” said midfielder Danny Barrera in an earlier interview. “Of course I want to play at the highest level, and if it happens in Sacramento that would be great,” Barrera said. “But my focus now is this team, this season and getting better and learning something each and every game.”
At the forefront of Republic FC’s focus is their next match on Sunday, when they travel to face Portland Timbers 2 and look to remain undefeated in USL play. Kickoff is 2 p.m. at Merlo Field.

Assistant Head Coach Adam Smith, who has been running the team’s training sessions while Buckle is in Connecticut in anticipation of the birth of his son, will coach Republic FC against T2.
However, the club isn’t skipping a beat, as Smith has previously run training sessions during the preseason. Smith has also been in contact with Buckle each day to review training sessions and plan for Sunday’s match.
“Nothing is going to change. We keep moving forward,” said Smith to the Bee.
For Smith, Sunday’s match will be a brief homecoming of sorts. He was on the Portland Timbers coaching staff for five seasons before joining Republic FC in 2015.
“For us as coaches and players, we have to focus on the now and this league and winning the next game which is this weekend,” said Smith.
Heading into Sunday’s match against T2, Republic FC is only club in the league that has yet to allow a goal. The undefeated club has allowed just two shots on goal in three matches.
Sunday’s match kicks off at 2 p.m. PT and will be streamed live at www.sacrepublicfc.com/matchday. Live updates will also be available at @SacRepublicFC and via #PORvSAC.
