Sacramento Republic Academy U-17/18s goalkeeper Cameron Douglas and U-15/16 forward Shaft Brewer Jr. have been called up to the U.S. Men’s U-18 National Team for a training camp taking place in Guadalajara, Mexico.
This is Douglas’ first call-up to the U.S. Youth National Team, while Brewer makes his second appearance on U.S. U-18 MNT Head Coach Omid Namazi’s 24-man roster. Brewer was part of the April training camp roster that defeated their Club Tijuana counterpart, notching the assist in the match-winning goal during the U-18s 2-1 win in April.
The camp runs through June 8, with a trio of friendly matches at hand for the U-18s. The team will face three Guadalajara teams with a rich history in Mexican soccer, taking on youth teams from Chivas de Guadalajara, Universidad de Guadalajara and Atlas FC. Republic FC’s first team is familiar with Atlas FC, previously hosting the club’s first team for summer friendlies in 2014 and 2015.
Brewer has been an integral part of the Republic FC Academy U-15/16s, with a team-leading 11 goals this season. For his part, Douglas has made his impact felt with the U-17/18s side this season, starting in all 21 of his appearances.
Douglas also had the opportunity to train with the Liverpool FC U21s during their open training at Bonney Field on May 20, receiving instruction from the Liverpool FC U21s coaching staff and taking part in a small scrimmage with the club.
This is just the latest round of national team call-ups for the Republic FC Academy. So far in the Academy’s inaugural season, a total of seven players have been called up to one of three national teams. Along with Brewer and Douglas, Republic FC U-13/14s midfielder Roberto Hategan, U-15/16s goalkeeper Mason Finnell, and U-17/18s defender David Burns and Nabilai Kibunguchy have all been called to various levels of the U.S. Youth National Team.
Outside of call-ups to the U.S. youth national team, U/17-18s defender Mackenzie Harrington was called up to the Canada U-18s team, while U-13/14s midfielder Graysen Garber was called up to Guam’s U-14s team this past March.
Both Brewer and Douglas will miss their sides’ final regular season match, with the U-15/16s hoping to clinch a spot in the playoffs. The U-17/18s have already qualified for playoffs. The Republic FC U-17/18 finish their regular season this Saturday, June 4 against Seattle Sounders FC Academy at Cosumnes River College. Kickoff is 10 a.m. The matches are free and open to the public.
