In dramatic fashion, Sacramento Republic FC’s U-15/16s Academy team secured their spot in the 2016 U.S. Soccer Development Academy Playoffs after a 3-0 win against Seattle Sounders FC Academy. The U-15/16s will join their older Republic FC Academy members, the U-17/18s, who had already clinched a postseason spot, at the Toyota Soccer Center in Frisco, Texas for the 2016 Playoffs from June 22-26.
“We’re excited for these boys. They worked hard, they’re very committed and they’re always there. They deserve this and to be there,” said Academy Director Rod Underwood.
With a 16-13-3 overall record and an average of 1.59 points per match, the U-15/16s finished the 2015-2016 season in fifth place of the Northwest Division of the Western Conference.
Prior to Saturday’s match, the U-15/16s were on the outside looking in for Playoffs, trailing two points behind the last wildcard spot in Playoffs. However, a brace from Leopoldo Hernandez accompanied by a goal form Oscar Govea to seal the shutout win. The three points from the win were enough to propel Republic FC up in the standings and earn a postseason spot.
The top 32 Academy teams from across the country will face off June 22-26 at the Toyota Soccer Center in Frisco, Texas for the 2016 Playoffs. Republic FC’s U-15/16s finished seventh of the 11 wildcard teams that qualified for the postseason.
On Wednesday, both Republic FC U-15s/16s and U-17/18s will be seeded in their respective age groups for the Playoffs. Teams are seeded in each age group into four pots based on their regular points per game and then randomly drawn into one of eight groups consisting of four teams per group. The draw for both age groups will be held on Wednesday via the U.S. Soccer Development Academy’s Twitter.
Over the course of the five-day group stage from June 22-26, both Republic FC U-15s/16s and U-17/18s will play three group matches. The winners of each group within their respective age groups will then advance to the tournament Knockout Round of the Development Academy Postseason, which begins on July 7.
All Academy Championship matches will take place at StubHub Center in Carson, Calif. on July 14 and 16.
