Two Sacramento Republic FC Academy members, Shaft Brewer Jr. and Cameron Douglas, returned home last week after a successful training camp with the U.S. U-18s Men’s National Team in Guadalajara, Mexico.
This was Brewer’s second call-up to the U.S. Men’s U-18 National Team, having participated in the April training camp, while this was the first national team training camp for Douglas.
“Being able to represent Republic at the national team level is a very big honor,” said Brewer.
Brewer and Douglas joined the U.S. Men’s U-18 National Team on May 28 and trained with the team through June 8. The U.S. U-18s trained in Guadalajara, Mexico with three friendlies lined up through their stay in the Jalisco capital.
On May 29, the U-18s faced Liga MX club Chivas de Guadalajara’s Academy team. Midfielder Ernesto Espinoza opened the tally for the U.S U-18s with a perfectly placed free kick from just outside the 18-yard box. U.S. forward Justin Rennicks converted a penalty in the 66th minute, before a Chivas player deflected the ball into his own net for the 3-0. Forward Nick Tatigue scored in the dying minutes of the match to give the U.S. U-18s a resounding 4-0 win. Brewer came on as a 68th minute sub.
In their second friendly, the team faced the Universidad de Guadalajara Academy team. The U.S. U-18s scored another four goals in 4-1 victory. Brewer was named on the starting roster and did not waste his opportunity, scoring his first international goal in the win. During the April training camp, Brewer recorded an assist for the match winning goal in a 2-1 win over Club Tijuana U-19/20s team.
“Scoring my first goal for the national team was an unbelievable feeling. I am really blessed and honored at the opportunity and I want to thank many people for getting me here,” said Brewer.
For his part, Douglas was in goal for the Universidad de Guadalajara match, conceding just one goal in the win. He did not make an appearance in the match against Chivas.
The last friendly for the U-18s was match against Atlas FC’s Academy on June 8. Atlas FC has one of the most prestigious academies in Mexico, having produced some of the biggest names in the country such as former FC Barcelona and current Atlas FC defender Rafael Marquez and PSV Eindhoven midfielder Andres Guardado, both current Mexico National Team players. The U-18s managed to get a narrow 1-0 win over Atlas FC, returning home from the training camp undefeated in all three friendlies.
The Republic FC Academy will begin their playoff run on June 22-25 in Frisco, Texas. Both teams will play three group stage matches at Toyota Park, hoping to advance to the Knockout Round, beginning July 7. The U.S. Development Academy Championship matches will take place on July 14 and July 16 at Stubhub Center in Carson, Calif.
Additionally, the U.S. Men’s National Team coaches will be on site to identify potential Republic FC players who could join Brewer and Douglas for future call-ups to U.S. youth national teams. Aside from Brewer and Douglas, several Republic FC Academy players have received call-ups to various U.S. youth national teams. These include U-17/18s defenders David Burns and Nabilai Kibunguchy, U-15/16s goalkeeper Mason Finnell and U-13/14s midfielder Roberto Hategan.
