In seeking to make Sacramento a better place to live, work and play, Sacramento Republic FC offer a variety of camps and clinics presented by Raley’s and Bel Air that are designed to encourage players of all skills levels and ages to play the beautiful game creatively.
The Republic FC Way
“We want to provide players an environment where they can train under the Republic FC Way,” said Camps and Clinics Coordinator Chris Malenab. “We realized there was a need and want to give players an opportunity to experience how our first team and Academy teams train.”
The Republic FC Way refers to the coaching and player development philosophy and style of play used by Republic FC at all levels, from their first team down to the U-12 Academy teams, who begin their inaugural season in Fall 2016.
“The Republic FC Way isn’t just on the football side of things, but also the way we expect our players to operate as far as their character, development of ability to work and their work rate,” said Malenab. “We want to develop more than good footballers, we want to develop players of all levels that represent Sacramento well on and off the pitch.”
The philosophy on the pitch is rooted in fundamental skills such as ball possession, speed and ball circulation in addition to development on and off the pitch, such as work rate, teamwork and overall character development.
Led by Malenab—as well as a combination of Republic FC players, first team staff and Academy staff depending on their training schedules—Republic FC camps and clinics focus on youth player development while also instilling a sense of community in the Indomitable City.
“With Academy coaches, they are coaches who have proven themselves and are engrained in the Republic FC Way everyday of the week for months on end,” said Malenab.
Providing a Creative Space to Encourage Risk Taking
In addition to teaching youth players the Republic FC Way, the club’s camps and clinics presented by Raley’s and Bel Air are designed specifically to encourage teamwork, individual development, creativity and risk-taking.
“We give players honest feedback,” said Malenab. “Our staff is capable of giving feedback that doesn’t necessarily determine things like playing time with their respective club teams. It takes a way those limitations.”
Malenab noted one of the biggest obstacles for players to overcome is being afraid to be creative. Often, with things such as team records, playing time or tryouts influencing players’ decisions on the pitch, players are restricted in their development.
To help players overcome their fears of being creative, learn new things and take risks, Republic FC camps and clinics are designed to be a supplement to players current clubs and teams, providing an environment focused on player development outside the box.
“We remove the fear of making mistakes,” said Malenab. “Often times kids are afraid of making mistakes because they think it will determine their playing time. And we’re totally removed from that.”
Camps and Clinics for All Ages and Skill Levels
Republic FC offers a variety of camps and clinics throughout the year, but work to provide the widest selection of camps and clinics during the summer, when youth players are out of school and during their respective clubs’ off seasons.
At the youngest age level, clinics start at age three and continue all the way to the adult level. The youngest level, Republic FC offers junior clinics for ages three to five that give players a fun and age appropriate opportunity to learn basic soccer skills. At the adult level, Republic FC will host their first adult clinic on August 7, giving fans over the age of 18 a first-hand experience to train like the club’s first team players.
However, the majority of Republic FC’s camps and clinics are designed for ages six to 18. Most camps and clinics are open to all skill levels, although there are several camps that are designed specifically for competitive players who play at an elite level such as the upcoming Elite Camp that runs July 25-28.
Additionally, no two camps or clinics are alike: Each camp and clinic’s curriculum is designed to provide players a unique learning opportunity, whether it’s their first Republic FC clinic or their fourth or even fifth.
“We want every kid and player to experience certain drills that even our professional players go through every day,” said Malenab. “We want to encourage players to apply the Republic FC Way to their performance both on and off the pitch, just like our first team.”
