Sacramento Republic FC midfielder Danny Barrera was named to USL Team of the Week for Week 16 of the 2016 USL season after recording two assists in Republic FC’s 3-3 draw against Orange County Blues FC on Sunday and a goal and an assist in Republic FC’s 2-3 loss to Real Monarchs on Wednesday, July 6.
Barrera finished as runner-up to New York Red Bulls II forward Brandon Allen for USL Player of the Week. Allen won the title after capturing 41 percent to Barrera's 24 percent of the poll conducted by a national panel of independent media representing every USL market.
In the match against Real Monarchs on Wednesday, Barrera recorded an assist and a goal, all off of set piece plays. In the 54th minute, Barrera played a free kick to defender Mike da Fonte, who then scored Republic FC’s first goal of the night. Just minutes later, Barrera tallied a goal of his own off an unassisted free kick during the club’s 2-3 loss.
On Sunday, Barrera further added to his week performance, tallying two more assists during Republic FC’s 3-3 draw against Orange County Blues FC.
For the first assist, Barrera played a short corner to midfielder Alfonso Motagalvan in the 21st minute. Motagalvan played the ball back to Barrera to cross the ball to da Fonte, who volleyed the ball into the goal. Barrera’s second assist of the night came in the 79th minute when he played a corner to forward Cameron Iwasa, who headed the ball into the net.
Barrera has recorded six assists and a goal over the past five matches for Republic FC, setting the club record for most consecutive matches with an assist. He also leads the USL in assists this season with six.
To-date, seven Republic FC players have earned USL Team of the Week honors this season. Defenders da Fonte, Emrah Klimenta, James Kiffe and Chris Christian, midfielder Tommy Thompson and forward Cameron Iwasa have all been named to USL Team of the Week.
