“To play a club the size of Chivas is always an attraction to the players, club and the sport,” said Republic FC Head Coach and Technical Director Paul Buckle. “We are always interested in playing top teams and we’ve demonstrated this by adding an iconic club such as Chivas to our growing list of international opponents. This will be an excellent chance for our squad to get top-level minutes against some of the best in the world.”
This will be the second Liga MX club that Republic FC has played, having played Atlas FC each of the last two years. Atlas FC won each of the previous meetings, defeating Republic FC 2-1 on July 6, 2014 and then 4-1 on July 8, 2015. Liga MX clubs CF Pachuca, Pumas UNAM and Toluca FC also played at Bonney Field. CF Pachuca defeated EPL club Sunderland AFC on July 17, 2015 and Pumas UNAM defeated Toluca FC on June 27, 2015.
Chivas is one of the most storied professional clubs in Mexico. Founded in May of 1906, Chivas was one of the founding members of Liga MX, winning 11 Primera Division titles to-date. They, along with their rivals Club América are the only two clubs in Liga MX history that have never been relegated. Chivas is the only club in Mexico to exclusively field Mexican players. The club also holds a homegrown commitment that has produced players such as Mexico internationals Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez, Marco Fabian and Carlos Vela. Guadalajara currently has four players representing Mexico’s Men’s National team at the Rio 2016 Olympics: Marco Bueno, Michael Perez, Carlos Salcedo and Carlos Cisneros.
The friendly is not included in the Republic FC season ticket package. Republic FC Season Ticket Holders will have the opportunity to secure purchase of their seats from now until 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 10.
Tickets will go on sale to the general public starting at 10 a.m. on Friday, August 12 on Ticketmaster.com. Avoid lines and buy online! Tickets start at $35 and there are no fees for online purchases.
