SACRAMENTO, Calif. (August 12, 2016) –Sacramento Republic FC have agreed to a contract with forward Christian Chaney for the remainder of the 2016 USL season. Chaney spent the 2016 PDL season with the Fresno Fuego and was the top ranked prospect in the PDL after scoring 13 goals this season.
“Christian proved himself as a perfect opportunist at the PDL level, scoring enough goals to propel himself to the top of the scoring charts,” said Republic FC Director of Football Graham Smith. “Our scouting and coaching staff watched him several times during the course of his season. Christian came on trial and was prepared to be assessed –always a positive sign of a player’s intent to succeed. He has a strong belief in his ability and is not frightened to work in those areas around the box that are so vital to a striker.”
“Together with the other young strikers at the club, Christian should benefit immensely from the vast experience of Carlton Cole,” continued Smith. “We now need to see whether or not he can step up to USL level and produce similar results. There are exciting times ahead for them all!”
Chaney scored a remarkable 13 goals and added an assist in just 1,008 minutes during his 12 PDL matches with the Fuego. Chaney had two multiple goal matches this season, including a four-goal performance in just 69 minutes played against the Las Vegas Mobsters on May 19. He also scored a goal in the Fuego’s lone playoff match against Burlingame Dragons FC on July 19. Chaney was second in the PDL in scoring, trailing Ocean City Nor’easters’ Chevaughn Walsh’s 14 goals, although Walsh had two more appearances and played 180 more minutes than Chaney.
Chaney has joined Republic FC, but will not travel with the club for their match against Saint Louis FC on Saturday, August 13. Kickoff is 5:30 p.m. at World Wide Technology Soccer Park in Saint Louis. The match will be streamed live at www.sacrepublicfc.com/matchday and YouTube.com/USL.
