Sacramento Republic FC forward Cameron Iwasa and midfielder Matt LaGrassa were named to the USL Team of the Week for Week 21 of league play, after the club’s 4-3 victory over Saint Louis FC on Saturday, August 13.
Iwasa recorded his second brace of his career and of the season, scoring two goals against Saint Louis FC to increase his club-leading total to nine goals. Midfielder JJ Koval opened the score line in the 5th minute and Iwasa doubled the lead in the 11th minute after making a perfect run behind a streaking Matt LaGrassa. LaGrassa sent the ball back to Iwasa to just nudge it past Saint Louis FC goalkeeper Ryan Thompson.
In the 57th minute, Iwasa completed his brace. Midfielder Tommy Thompson made a great run down the right side before sending a perfectly lofted cross into the 18-yard box. An unmarked Iwasa rose to head the ball into the net to give Republic FC a comfortable 4-1 lead.
LaGrassa earned his Team of the Week honors after recording his first two professional assists against Saint Louis FC. LaGrassa had a standout performance, making great runs that contributed to both Iwasa’s first goal and also the third Republic FC goal of the night. LaGrassa linked up with Iwasa on his second assist, using a one-two play before finding space to send a cross to the right for Octavio Guzman to tap it in.
Iwasa currently leads the Republic FC offense with nine goals and two assists on the season. For his part, LaGrassa is integrating himself onto the roster nicely after a loan spell saw him play with Tulsa Roughnecks FC for parts of June and July. Since returning from his loan, LaGrassa has made an appearance in every Republic FC match.
Both Iwasa and LaGrassa are Sacramento region soccer products, with Iwasa having attended and played for Jesuit High School in Sacramento and LaGrassa having done the same for Pleasant Grove High School in Elk Grove. Iwasa went on to play collegiately at UC Irvine, while LaGrassa played at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
Iwasa and LaGrassa are joined on the USL Team of the Week by goalkeeper Clement Diop (LA Galaxy II); defenders Joel Johnson (Charlotte Independence), Steven Taylor (Portland Timbers FC 2), and Josh Suggs (Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC); midfielders Sunny Jane (Richmond Kickers), Jose Barril (Harrisburg City Islanders), and Junior Flemmings (New York Red Bulls II); and forwards Ballou Jean-Yves Tabla (FC Montreal) and Emilio Garcia (Rio Grande Valley FC).
