Sacramento Republic FC announced two more grant recipients of the Glory Glory Sacramento Fund. Powerhouse Science Center and La Familia Counseling Center will each receive a grant from the fund to bolster their respective programs and collective efforts to build healthy communities.
The Powerhouse Science Center serves as a science education resource for the region’s schools, allowing students and families to have a scientific learning experience that is hands-on. The center was established in 1951 with a mission to be the epicenter for science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM, education and exploration in the Sacramento region.
With a $20,000 grant awarded, the Powerhouse Science Center will install a temporary exhibit designed to teach children and their families healthy eating and wellness habits through interactive activities. The center will exhibit what an appropriate serving size for meals should look like, allow visitors to see firsthand what it takes to burn off calories, test visitors’ flexibility and balance, display the latest clinical research and demonstrate the overall wellness benefits of making healthy choices.
La Familia Counseling Center provides counseling, outreach and support services to at-risk youth and families in Sacramento County. The center runs a wide range of programs, from behavioral and physical health services for children and their families, to employment services and adult education open to all members of the community.
The grant awarded will help La Familia Counseling Center install outdoor recreational and exercise equipment around the facility’s campus to further encourage physical activity. The grant will also be used to upgrade current equipment, such as adding swings to the will create a theatre room, music room and an afterschool study hall to engage students within its building in addition to the upgrades outside.
Both Powerhouse Science Center and La Familia Counseling Center were recognized on Saturday, August 20 during halftime of Republic FC vs Portland Timbers 2. Each organization will also be paired with a Republic FC player who will serve as a mentor or spokesperson for the nonprofit, visit its facilities and share each respective charity’s story with Sacramento.
The Glory Glory Sacramento Fund was created to celebrate and elevate nonprofits that share the same indomitable spirit as our region and provides individual grants up to $20,000. At least 15 nonprofits will be selected for grants by the end of the 2016 season.
