While Sacramento Republic FC look to begin their third consecutive postseason run as they host Orange County Blues FC on Saturday, Oct. 1 at Bonney Field, the club is also celebrating the conclusion of a historic regular season.
Republic FC captured their first-ever USL Western Conference regular season title, ending the season with a 14-6-10 record and 52 points after a romping 4-0 win against Tulsa Roughnecks FC on Saturday.
In addition to a first place finish in the West, the 2016 season was a record breaking year for Republic FC in multiple categories.
- First Western Conference regular season title
- New club single season attendance record (172,711)
- Bonney Field single match attendance record (11,569)
- Undefeated streak (11 matches, July 30-current)
- Shutouts in a season (12)
- Single season scoring record (12, Iwasa)
- Single season assist record (9, Barrera)
On the pitch the team set numerous records in addition to the conference title, including a new undefeated record and fewest losses in a season. Republic FC kicked off an 11-match undefeated streak on July 30 with a scoreless draw against Rio Grande Valley FC. The streak will be ongoing at the start of the 2017 season. In addition to their impressive undefeated streak, Republic FC recorded their fewest regular season losses in a season, losing just six matches compared to eight in 2015 and seven in 2014, the year the boys in Old Glory Red won their USL title.
Defensively, 2016 was also an impressive year for Republic FC. The backline and goalkeepers set a new club record for least goals allowed in a season, allowing just 27 goals in 30 matches or just .90 goals allowed per match. Meanwhile, goalkeepers Dominik Jakubek and Evan Newton went for a combined 11 shutouts on the season, three more shutouts than the previous record of 9 (which was set in 2014 and tied in 2015).
On offense, Republic FC players also shined as forward Cameron Iwasa scored eleven goals to set a new club record for most goals in a season, breaking the previous record set by Tommy Stewart in 2014 when he scored 11. Iwasa broke the record over the course of a 30-match regular season, while Republic FC played a 28-match season in 2014. On top of his goals, Iwasa also set a club record for most shots and with 57.
Midfielder Danny Barrera broke the club record for assists in a season with nine, breaking the record of eight set by Rodrigo Lopez in 2014 (and tied the following season). Barrera finished as the USL’s runner-up for most assists, just one behind Portland Timbers 2’s Villyan Bijev.
Iwasa and Barrera also broke the club record for USL match appearances, each appearing in all 30 of Republic FC’s USL regular season matches.
Off the field, the club set a new club season attendance record of 172,711 over 15 matches, breaking last season’s attendance of 158,516 over 14 matches. During the 2016 season, Republic FC averaged 11,514 fans per match in 2016, selling out all but one USL match. The club also set a new single match attendance record of 11,569 (up from 11,442), due to expanded seating in the VIP and Field seating areas.
Republic FC will look to continue their historic year as they make their third consecutive USL Playoff appearance in as many seasons. The boys in Old Glory Red will host Orange County Blues FC in the Western Conference Quarterfinals on Saturday, Oct. 1. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. at Bonney Field.
