Republic FC Fans Give Back
Republic FC fans took their passion for Sacramento from the stands to the community, taking part in a multitude of donation drives throughout 2016. From art supplies, to toilet paper and backpacks to a food drive, fans showed their generosity each time, helping a variety of community programs that help elevate our region into a better place to live, work and play.
This year also marked the third Caped Crusader Night presented by Jiffy Lube, a night where players wear custom-made capes that are later auctioned off to raise money for Capes4Heroes. The Northern California nonprofit provides personalized superhero capes for child heroes battling life-threatening illnesses, disabilities or life struggles.
Republic FC fans donated $4,260 on Caped Crusader Night this year, and in November more than 100 customized superhero capes were delivered to UC Davis Children’s Hospital patients and their siblings. Goalkeeper Evan Newton was part of the capes delivery efforts, along with representatives from Capes4Heroes, Republic FC and Jiffy Lube. Capes4Heroes volunteers also custom embroidered the first initial of each patient on their cape.
Fans also donated more than 200 toys and books in a holiday book and toy drive. The donation drive kicked off on Dec. 7 and ran through Dec. 24. The toys will go to the Sacramento Children’s Home is a local nonprofit that is dedicated to caring for the community’s most vulnerable children and families, providing a variety of services to families in crisis and troubled or abused children. The books will be donated to the Sacramento Library, which serves more than 1.3 million people throughout the Sacramento region.
Most recently, fans showed an outpouring of support for a family of fans that lost everything in a house fire. Carlos Raul Castillo, a Republic FC fan who volunteers for Land Park Soccer, lost his family home earlier this month in a fire that destroyed all of the family’s possessions including furniture, clothes and other essentials for the family of eight.
Immediately after Republic FC shared the Castillo family’s story, fans sprang into action, making monetary donations through the Go Fund Me set up for the family, as well as donating clothes, household items and even gifts for the family’s four young girls.
To-date, Republic FC fans, players and other community members have donated more than $6,000, as well as many household items for the family as they begin to rebuild their lives.
