#8 April Fools’ Joke – The Quails
In the spirit of April Fools Day, Republic FC announced in jest on April 1, 2016 that the club had decided to select the California quail as a mascot and incorporate the bird as a symbol of a secondary crest. The new crest was described as “two California quails, Urbs and Indomita—on top of the star with the Republic FC wordmark banner overlaying over the star [and] it also captures the innovative spirit of the club with the two quails.”

The announcement also introduced the club’s two new live quail mascots, Urbs and Indomita, who were to take part in a new tradition – The Running of the Quails – set to take place before the players walkout. Camouflage third kits were also part of the new Republic FC look and the new crest was to be featured on the players’ shorts.

For many fans, the joke was taken quite literally. Over 50 fans arrived early at Republic FC’s home opener on April 2 in hopes of being the first to receive an exclusive quail crest camouflage scarf, as well as lapel pins and temporary tattoos featuring the new secondary logo for all fans. Needless to say, there was a bit of disappointment when it was realized the announcement was an April Fools joke and linked to a “rickroll.”
