SACRAMENTO, Calif. (April 7, 2018)— Sacramento Republic FC continued its undefeated streak in league play after defeating Seattle Sounders FC 2 at home in a match that featured three red cards and a penalty kick goal from Adam Moffat.
Republic FC kept the pressure on Sounders 2 in the early stages of the match, but it was the visitors who gained an early advantage. Sacramento defender Mitchell Taintor was shown a straight red card in the 20th minute after making a goal-denying tackle just outside the box on S2 forward Felix Chenkam.
Despite playing a man down, the home side had the best scoring chance of the first half. Defender Shannon Gomez surged up the right wing before sending a cross into the box to Cameron Iwasa. The Sacramento native ran onto the ball to fire a left-footed shot from the top of the box, but slid his effort just wide of the near post.
The extra man advantage would be wiped away for S2 just before halftime when defender Rodrigo Ele was shown his second yellow card of the game. His 44th minute red card evened up the sides at 10 apiece as the match went into halftime scoreless.

Republic FC nearly found the first goal at the hour mark of the match. Midfielder Villyan Bijev ran onto a through ball in the box and poked a shot past the oncoming S2 keeper Sam Fowler. Bijev beat the keeper, but hit the inside of the post and the S2 defense was able to clear away the danger before the ball could sneak over the goal line.
S2 went down to nine men in the 64th minute after defender Denso Ulysse was shown a straight red for his reckless challenge on Bijev. Minutes later, Republic FC defender Shannon Gomez was tripped in S2’s box and was awarded a penalty kick. Midfielder Adam Moffat stepped up to the spot and slotted home the shot past Fowler.
The visitors would have equalized in stoppage time if not for Republic FC keeper Josh Cohen. S2 forward Nick Hinds was able to get in the box and fire a shot on goal. Cohen came off his line to block the shot and preserve all three points for his team.
“Don’t panic,” said Republic FC Head Coach Simon Elliott on his message to his squad at halftime. “We turned the ball over. I think we’re a little fortunate to get three points. I’m looking at performance, but I think we’re fortunate to pick up points tonight. Our performance has to be better.”
Next for the Indomitable Club is a trip to Nevada to take on Las Vegas Lights FC on Saturday, April 14. Kickoff is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. PT and the match will be broadcast live on KQCA My58, Estrella TV 58.3 and www.sacrepublicfc.com/matchday-guide.
