Sacramento Republic FC midfielder Jaime Villarreal has been named to the USL Team of the Week for Week 4 for his performance in Republic FC’s 1-0 win over Seattle Sounders FC 2. Villarreal becomes the second Republic FC player to receive USL Team of the Week honors in the 2018 season, after Mitchell Taintor claimed a spot in Week 2.
Republic FC were forced to rework themselves early in the match as Taintor was ejected from the match in the 20th minute, leaving Republic FC with one man less than S2 on the field, until the 44th minute when Rodrigue Ele got his own marching orders. Villarreal played a key central role in the match, helping control the distribution in midfield and completing 41 of 46 passes. Villarreal also recorded four tackles and one interception in Republic FC’s win over S2.
A USL Western Conference standout, Villarreal was already familiar to Republic FC fans when he joined the club in the offseason. The 22-year-old midfielder was a stalwart of LA Galaxy II, one of Republic FC’s fiercest rivals in the league, and helped lead Los Dos past Republic FC in the 2016 USL Western Conference Playoffs. After impressing with Los Dos, Villarreal was offered a contract with the first team, signing with LA Galaxy in 2017. The midfielder made seven appearances, including four starts, with the Galaxy last season.
Republic FC are back on the road this weekend when they face Las Vegas Lights FC at Cashman Field. Kickoff is 8 p.m. The match will be broadcast live on KQCA My58 and Estrella TV Sacramento. This will also be the first match broadcast on ESPN+, the USL’s new broadcast partner; you can learn more about it here. There will be no YouTube stream. You can also follow the match live on Twitter @SacRepublicFC or using #LVvSAC.
