Republic FC is looking to make club history on Wednesday night.
The boys in Old Glory Red will be taking on LAFC in the Round of 16 of the 2018 Lamar Hunt Open Cup. Kick off at the brand-new Banc of California Stadium is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and the match will be streamed live on www.sacrepublicfc.com/matchday-guide and on USsoccer.com.
Wednesday’s encounter marks the second consecutive year Sacramento has advanced to the Round of 16 after defeating an MLS side. The club defeated Real Salt Lake 4-1 in 2017 and followed that up with a 2-1 win over Seattle Sounders FC this year. However, Republic FC has yet to taste the competition’s Quarterfinals and will be looking to make history on Wednesday night.
Standing in their way of a historic night will be a familiar opponent. The Indomitable Club faced off against LAFC in a preseason friendly back in February, falling to Bob Bradley’s side 0-1. In a curious twist of fate, both of Republic FC’s MLS opponents in the Cup are teams the club faced in preseason.
A lot has changed since February, however. Back then, Republic FC was practically a new team with only eight returning players from the previous season and a new head coach. Meanwhile, LAFC was literally a brand-new team finding its legs as it embarked on its inaugural MLS season.
The two sides have since kicked off their seasons to good starts, with both residing in third place of their respective conferences.
Adding an additional layer of intrigue to the match is a potential encounter for Republic FC against own of its own. Sacramento native and Republic FC Academy product Shaft Brewer Jr. signed for LAFC earlier this season and might face his former club on Wednesday night. Brewer Jr. previously came on as a 68th-minute substitute in LAFC’s Fourth Round win over Fresno FC.
The winner of Wednesday’s match will book their ticket to the Quarterfinals where they will host Major League Soccer's Portland Timbers on July 18.
