CHICAGO, Ill. (September 28, 2018) — Sacramento Republic FC forward Mario Penagos has been called up to the U.S. Under-17 Men’s National Team that will head to Mexico City to compete in the 2018 Four Nations Tournament from September 30 to October 8.
CHICAGO, Ill. (September 28, 2018) — Sacramento Republic FC forward Mario Penagos has been called up to the U.S. Under-17 Men’s National Team that will head to Mexico City to compete in the 2018 Four Nations Tournament from September 30 to October 8.

Penagos is one of 20 players that will represent the U.S. as they face off against Argentina on October 4 and Mexico the following day, before concluding the competition against Chile on October 7.
This group of players is nine months into its two-year cycle as the U-17 MNT and will transition to the U-19 team in 2020. The roster forms the core of players who will compete at the 2019 Concacaf U-17 Championship for a regional title and berth to the 2019 FIFA U-17 World Cup.

An Elk Grove native, Penagos is entering his fourth season with the SRFC Academy after joining in its inaugural season in 2015. The 16-year-old made 28 appearances for the U-16/17 team last year, scoring seven goals in the span. That followed a breakout 2016-17 season with the U-14 team where he scored 28 goals from 27 appearances, all starts.
Penagos was recently signed to an ‘Academy Player on Professional Team’ contract with Republic FC, which allows him to play in first team professional matches while still maintaining NCAA eligibility.
Republic FC return to USL play this Saturday, September 29, as the club seeks to secure a home playoffs berth. Kickoff at Papa Murphy’s Park against Portland Timbers 2 is at 7:30 p.m. PT and tickets are available via Ticketmaster.com.
