What’s the latest on the team?
Republic FC (13-11-5, 44 pts) earned a point in the Western Conference standings on Sunday following a 0-0 draw to OKC Energy FC in the Sooner State.
Sacramento produced plenty of goal scoring chances but the Indomitable Club just couldn’t get one by the busy Energy FC goalkeeper. Republic FC outshot OKC 21 to 6 and out possessed the hosts 57% to 43%.
Defensively, SRFC was unbreakable and held the hosts to just two shots on target the entire match. This was the 12th time this season Republic FC limited the opposition to two shots on goal or less this season and the second time in as many games. The shutout was also the 12th of the 2019 campaign and ties an all-time club record for clean sheets in a single season during league play, alongside the 2016 and 2018 squads. The boys in Old Glory Red have now posted 14 clean sheets in all competitions this season.
The result left Republic FC in fifth place, one spot away from a coveted first-round home playoff match. Even though Simon Elliott’s men are currently on the outside of the top four looking in, the team has full control over their playoff-hosting destiny. If they win out, the fourth and final postseason home game honor is all theirs.
What about the other guys?
El Paso Locomotive FC (10-9-9, 39 pts) appear to be finding their form at just the right time, having only lost just once over their last four matches. The Texan club is currently 10th in the Western Conference and in possession of the final playoff spot. At home against Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC last weekend, goals from Byram Rebellon and Alexy Bosetti helped Locomotive FC cruise to a 2-0 win. El Paso is tied for the fourth-most clean sheets in league play this season with 12.
After opening the season unbeaten on the road over their first seven matches (3-0-4), El Paso has only picked up one away win in eight straight games. Since late June in USL play, Locomotive FC has been outscored 12 to 5. The club from the Lone Star State has been shutout seven times away from home this season.
El Paso’s attack is anchored by forwards Jerome Kiesewetter who leads the team in goals with 11 and Omar Salgado’s six assists is also a team-best.
Head-to-Head
Only once have these two Western Conference foes clashed with El Paso taking the first match, 3-1. Republic FC will be looking for win number one against the Texan club as well as building on their current four-game unbeaten run in league play.
A familiar face returning to Sacramento is defender James Kiffe who was a member of the 2014 USL Championship side and made 89 appearances with the Indomitable Club from 2014-2017. Kiffe is a regular in the El Paso starting eleven and has played the full 90 minutes in four of their last five matches.
- Overall: 0-1-0 (GF: 1; GA: 3)
- Home: 0-0-0
- Away: 0-1-0
