On Wednesday, the Sacramento Republic FC Foundation joined forces with Micron Technology to provide San Juan Unified students with a $50,000 grant to aid in eliminating the difficulties of distance learning during the recent pandemic.
The grant was awarded to the San Juan Education Foundation to provide financial support to the San Juan Unified School District during a ceremony at Greer Elementary, just one of the schools where Micron’s COVID Task Force will provide solutions to students during the 2020-2021 school year.

Micron is going above and beyond the call of duty to provide the necessary help, tools and innovative ideas to help the entire community continue to put education first for the youth of the region. The generous grant was an extremely thoughtful gesture, but the emphasis for education is of vital importance in the community to Micron.

"The COVID-19 pandemic has changed education, requiring students, staff and the whole community to engage in learning in new ways,” said San Juan Unified Board of Education President Paula Villescaz. “With the support of amazing community partners, we’re working every day to meet the challenges that have been created like closing the digital divide by ensuring each of our students has access to devices and internet connectivity."
“Starting the school year with remote learning and school closures has been difficult for many families in Sacramento, and we are determined to provide resources to those who need it most,” said Kris Baxter, corporate vice president and general manager of the Embedded Business Unit at Micron. “At the Micron Foundation, we are always looking for ways to enrich the learning experience, and this grant will help provide our local students and teachers with the necessary equipment to keep the school year moving ahead during this challenging time.”

At the ceremony, Republic FC President and COO Ben Gumpert joined Micron Technologies Director of Marketing: EBU Pricing & Business Strategy Mark Bahouth, San Juan Education Foundation Board Chair Bryan McKrell and San Juan Unified School District Board of Education President Paula Villescaz were on site to accept the grant that are intended to help bridge the digital divide during the pandemic. Students and families within the school district were also in attendance to pick up the learning materials to further help with distance learning during these unprecedented times.

Wireless hotspots and connectivity issues were discussed during the celebration as traditional ways of connecting to the internet can often times be a challenge. Micron and Republic FC are hopeful the grant can help the community cope with adapting to the virtual learning environments at home.
