SACRAMENTO, California (September 26, 2021) – Republic FC fell on Sunday afternoon after two second half scores for Galaxy II.
While the hosts would hold the edge in both possession and shots taken, Mark Briggs’ men were unable to find the net during the contest.
“If you don't put the ball in the back of the net you don't you don't win games,” said coach Mark Briggs. “It's pretty straightforward, and that's what we haven't done recently.”
The Indomitable club pressed well in the opening half, holding 54% possession and keeping a majority of the first half’s action in the attacking third. The Boys in Old Glory Red would tally seven shots to two from LA.
A chance from Emil Cuello in the 14th minute came close to opening the scoring. After receiving a well placed through pass from Darek Formella, the midfielder’s shot went just high.
Sacramento began to tack on chances as the second half went on. A Los Angeles clearance would ricochet off the shin of Dan Casey in the 57th minute and nearly bounced in, but the ball would be jumped on by keeper Justin vomSteeg. A Jerome Kiesewetter cross would nearly be put through by Kharlton Belmar moments later, but vomSteeg came up with the stop again after the forward was unable to get a foot on it.
Los Dos would find the net in the 67th minute on a loose ball off of a free kick, with Jalen Neal finding the back of the net.
While the Indomitable Club continued to manufacture chances- most notably a 77th minute shot from Maalique Foster that nearly opened his 2021 scoring account- Sacramento still was unable to break through. Republic FC would finish with 18 shot attempts on the day, the clubs eighth double-digit shot performance in the last nine contests.
Andrew Wheeler-Omiunu, impressed in his tenth start of the season. The midfielder would complete 86% of his passes on the afternoon while winning 83% of his duels on the defensive end in his first start since the club’s last meeting with Galaxy II on September 1.
Galaxy II doubled their lead late, when Adrian Gonzalez put in the visitors’ second score of the day in the 90th minute.
The Indomitable Club will return to action next week, when they welcome Tacoma Defiance to Heart Health Park on Saturday, October 2. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. on Republic FC’s Breast Health Awareness Night, and the match will be broadcast live on KQCA My58, Estrella TV Sacramento, and ESPN+.
