SACRAMENTO, California (October 2, 2021) – The Boys in Old Glory Red remained unbeaten when scoring first on Saturday evening , taking three points on Breast Health Awareness Night at Heart Health Park.
After Republic FC took an early lead, Emil Cuello bagged his first career score for the Indomitable Club, and Luis Felipe added some insurance late to help nab Sacramento its first win at home since August 14.
Republic FC would waste no time getting on the board, pulling ahead 1-0 in just the 8th minute. After playing the ball across to Duke Lacroix in the middle, Cam Iwasa jetted into traffic and fielded a well-placed pass from the defender before punching one through for his seventh score of the season. Lacroix’s assist was his team-leading fourth of the year.

The hosts kept the pressure on, and nearly doubled their advantage in the 26th minute. A great cross from Darek Formella would find the feet of Maalique Foster at close range, but his attempt would go high of the target. Foster would finish the night with three shots, with one on target, in 73 minutes.
Carlos Saldaña performed well for Republic FC, logging three saves in his first professional start and appearance with the club. The Vallejo native made his first save in the 39thminute, and added another stop in the 54th on a strong strike from Samuel Adeniran.
“I thought Carlos, all night from start to finish, was fantastic,” said Coach Mark Briggs. “He brought energy, he made big saves in big moments, and he was constantly communicating. I’m really pleased for him.”
After threatening continuously to open the second half, Republic FC would double their advantage in the 66th minute, when Emil Cuello would net his first score with the club. Cuello ended the night with two chances created, as well as his first-ever assist with Sacramento.

An Alex Villanueva goal in the 72nd minute would briefly cut Republic FC’s lead in half, scoring on a free kick from just outside the penalty box. However, Sacramento would answer back quickly, netting their third of the night when Luis Felipe rocketed one past Christian Herrera five minutes later. The goal was Felipe’s tenth career score in USL league play, and his first since Sacramento’s 3-1 win over Las Vegas on September 5.
Republic FC will return to the pitch on Wednesday, when they take to the Bay Area for a matchup with Oakland Roots SC. Kickoff is slated for 7:00PM from Laney College, and the match will be streamed live on ESPN+
