Sacramento, Calif. – Earlier today, Sacramento Republic FC announced the addition of three local youth players from the club’s development academy to the first-team roster. Leonardo Martinez, Daniel Govea, and Michaelaaron Ortez have signed USL Academy Player Contracts, making them eligible to join Sacramento’s first team for USL Championship matches, pending league and federation approval. All three players currently feature for Sacramento’s U19 Academy squad.
“We would like to congratulate Daniel, Leonardo, and Michaelaaron on earning this opportunity with our first team,” said Republic FC President and General Manager Todd Dunivant. “Our academy continues to produce talented players that are deserving of the chance to play with our first team.”
Martinez and Ortez each are earning their first opportunities with Sacramento’s first team. A defender from Bioloa, CA, Martinez joined the clubin 2020 and helped the U19 side reach the MLS NEXT Cup playoffs in his first season. Before joining Republic FC, hefeatured for Central Valley club Cosmos SC in NorCal Premier. Ortez, a midfielder from Merced, joined the Indomitable Club’s youth ranks this past fall; he previously competed at the youth level with Merced United FC, also in NorCal Premier.
An 18-year-old midfielder from Los Banos, California, Govea will join the first team on an Academy Contract for the second time, after signing an academy contract last July. He joined Republic FC’s Academy in 2017, previously featuring for BK Elite. His older brother Oscar spent three seasons with the club’s Academy before joining the men’s soccer team at Sacramento State University.
Govea, Martinez, and Ortez join an elite class of 26 other players to earn first team opportunities through the club’s academy system. Ahead of the 2022 season, the club announced the signing of Santiago Suarez, J.P. Cortez, Chase Tanon, Corey Hart, Fernando “Pepe” Venegas, and Jesus “Chuy” Sanchez to academy contracts. This season, Suarez, Tanon, and Cortez have all been selected to the matchday roster at least once, and Cortez made his first team debut on April 7 in U.S. Open Cup play.
Pending approval, the players on USL Academy contracts will be available for selection for this Sunday’s match at New York Red Bulls II. Kickoff is set for 10:00 a.m., and the match will be broadcast live on FOX40, FOX40.com and on the FOX40 App, as well as streamed on ESPN+.
