Detroit, Mich. (June 11, 2022) – Republic FC snapped Detroit City FC’s home unbeaten streak on Saturday night, securing all three points in a cross-conference tilt. Republic FC’s performance notched the club’s second straight clean sheet performance and back-to-back wins.
Sacramento found an early score and never looked back, taking control of the match when Damia Viader put one in the back of the net in the 10th minute. The Spaniard caught Detroit’s Nathan Steinwascher and the Detroit defense flat footed with a pinpoint strike from outside the penalty area, marking his second score of the season. Moments later, Rodrigo Lopez nearly doubled his club’s lead with a great attempt from the left, kept out only by the post.
A pair of excellent saves from Danny Vitiello just before the break kept the hosts from equalizing. As Detroit pushed forward in the 40th minute, forward Antoine Hoppenot put a great look on frame headed towards the near post but a diving effort neutralized the chance. A leaping stop from Vitiello kept the ensuing corner kick from finding the net, keeping Sacramento’s early momentum intact heading into the break. Vitiello finished the contest with four saves, recording his third clean sheet in league play this season while facing just four shots on target for the match.
Coming out of the break, the hosts pressed early. Antoine Hoppenot and Maxi Rodriguez – responsible for five scores in the club’s last four matches – each got good looks at goal as Le Rouge looked to equalize. Sacramento took advantage of the host’s aggression, finding the net again just after the break when Keko punched through his second score of the year – and first since opening night – silencing the home crowd and sending his club back home with a victory.
Republic FC returns to Heart Health Park to defend home turf once again. On Saturday, June 18, LA Galaxy II makes its lone visit to Heart Health Park this season. Kickoff is set for 8:00 p.m., and the contest will be broadcast on FOX40 and Antenna TV 40.2, as well as on FOX40.com, the FOX40 News mobile app and streaming on ESPN+.
