Sacramento, Calif. (June 18, 2022) – Republic FC took all three points from LA Galaxy II on Saturday night, extending their home unbeaten streak and logging their third clean sheet in as many contests.
After a quiet first half, Sacramento turned on the jets after the break to extend their home unbeaten streak to 11 – the second longest in club history. A penalty score from Luther Archimede, and Rafa Jauregui’s first career goal as a professional put the match away following a flurry of changes after the hour mark.
Republic FC found just two opportunities in the first half – both off the foot of Maalique Foster making his first start of the season. A pair of lucky breaks kept the score tied early on – just after the 10 minute mark, Los Dos forward Remy Cabral put a great look on frame that had Carlos Saldana beat, but went off the crossbar and narrowly avoid going over the line. Cabral put another look of the post in the 17th minute that was cleared out by Lee Desmond.
Making his first appearance since May 8, Carlos Saldana was excellent between the sticks, logging his second clean sheet of the year and tallying one save – a crucial stop to deny Axel Picazo looking to punch in service from the left.
Sacramento found their footing following Saldana’s save, upping the intensity to put Los Dos on their heels throughout the final half-hour. Luther Archimede’s opening score came from the penalty spot – his second score of the season – after being taken down by goalkeeper Richard Sanchez while pursuing an excellent ball through from Zeiko Lewis. Not ten minutes later, Rafa Jauregui netted the first score of just pro career just moments later – making him the youngest goalscorer in Republic FC history – before being lifted for Keko.
Republic FC now turns their attention to Tuesday night’s U.S. Open Cup Quarterfinal match, pitting the club against LA Galaxy in Carson. Kickoff from Dignity Health Sports Park is set for 7:30 p.m., and the match will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
