Earlier today, the USL Championship announced that Republic FC’s Danny Vitiello was nominated for Fan’s Choice Save of the Week for Week 18. Voting is open now at USLChampionship.com through Friday, July 15 at 9:00 a.m. PT.
Republic FC and NorCal rival Oakland Roots traded punches throughout the match. In the first half, the visitors put pressure on Republic FC in transition, crossing a ball into midfielder Mikael Johnsen crashing net just after the half-hour mark. Johnsen put a great look on target to challenge Danny Vitiello between the sticks, but Sacramento’s keeper reacted quickly to the forward’s close-range shot, deflecting it away for an Oakland corner kick to keep the match tied at one apiece.
This is Vitiello’s seventh career nomination for the weekly honor and his second of the 2022 season. He last was nominated in Week 7 for a diving stop against Rio Grande Valley FC. In 2021, he was recognized for his weekly work in the box five times as a member of Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC.
