Sacramento, Calif. – On Tuesday, the USL Championship announced Republic FC defender Dan Casey was named to the USL Championship Team of the Week for Week 27.
The Irish defender helped Sacramento to its ninth clean sheet in league play this season, and netted his second goal of 2022. On the backline, Casey won possession eight times and cleared out two threats, helping Republic FC keep pressure away for the entire 90 minutes. His performance helped the club keep their opponent without a shot on target for the first time this season, and the first time since 2016.
Casey also netted his club’s third goal of the night in the 65th minute. After a header on service from Damia Viader was denied by the opposing goalkeeper, he put through the rebound after it fell to his feet in front of goal. In addition to his score, Casey entered the final third six times on the night as his club registered 23 total shots, their second-highest total of the season.
This is Casey’s second selection to the league’s weekly top squad this season. He last earned a spot on Team of the Week Bench in Week 8 after netting a score in a 1-1 draw with Las Vegas Lights FC at Heart Health Park. His selection also marks the third time a Sacramento player has been named to the league’s weekly top squad in four weeks; Keko earned a selection in Week 24, followed by Conor Donovan in Week 25.
Republic FC is back in action this Sunday, September 18 against Orange County SC on Youth Soccer Day at Heart Health Park. Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m., and the match will be broadcast nationally on ESPN2. Tickets are still available at SacRepublicFC.com/single-match-tickets; and the first 1,000 fans will receive a team poster presented by Western Health Advantage.
