Two things in the world bring people together more successfully than anything else – food and sport. For Republic FC players their favorite foods are both serious business, and serve as a way to stay connected with their heritage and background. With the club celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month from Sep. 15 to Oct. 15, learn about, make, enjoy, and celebrate on your own some of the players’ favorite dishes from their home countries or others.
Carlos Saldaña: Tacos al Pastor
For the Vallejo-born goalkeeper, and son of Mexican immigrants, nothing beats the simplicity of Tacos al Pastor – a flavorful marinated pork. Especially when they can be whipped up so quickly to satisfy at any time of day or night.
Rafa Jauregui: Pozole Rojo
The club’s youngest player enjoys most the comforts of pozole, a corn-based soup with pork. Jauregui enjoys it with a red chili-based sauce, although a green tomatillo-based sauce is also common (and debated as superior). It reminds him of the holidays, as it’s the dish his family prepares to celebrate Christmas each year.
Rodrigo Lopez: Ceviche
Lopez’s mother’s pozole is actually his favorite – she makes the best, according to him. But if you ask RoRo’s teammates, their captain authors a killer ceviche, making the dish a must-include on this list. The Latin American staple is a simple, but popular dish that can be made as unique as the chef desires.
Douglas Martinez: Baleadas
The Honduran’s favorite food from his home is baleadas – a street dish that starts with homemade tortillas. The simple-to-prepare snack is a staple, sometimes considered among the country’s most popular and often a must for tourists.
