Sacramento, Calif. – On Tuesday, the USL Championship announced that Republic FC forward Russell Cicerone was named to the league’s Team of the Week Bench for Week 1. Cicerone netted the lone goal in the club’s season opener on March 11 at El Paso Locomotive FC – the deciding score in the club’s 1-0 win at Southwest University Park.
Cicerone became the ninth Republic FC player to score his debut goal on opening night, scoring in the 42nd minute. After the club won possession in the defensive half, Rodrigo Lopez pushed forward into the midfield before finding Jack Gurr in stride on the right flank. Gurr sent a low first-touch cross to his new teammate on the back post, who punched it through for the eventual winner.
In addition to his score, Cicerone finished the match tied for the club lead with two shots and created two additional scoring chances. The selection marks his 15th career USL Championship Team of the Week Selection; in 2022, he earned the honor six times as a member of Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC.
Republic FC is back in action this Saturday, March 18 for the 2023 home opener. Eastern Conference side Charleston Battery visits Heart Health Park for the first time since the 2014 season. Kickoff for the contest is set for 7:00 p.m., and the match will be broadcast live on FOX40, Antenna TV 40.2, FOX40.com and the FOX40 App, and streaming on ESPN+.
