Sacramento, Calif. – On Tuesday, the USL Championship announced two Republic FC players have been named to the USL Championship Team of the Week. Captain Rodrigo Lopez was named to Team of the Week, and defender Jack Gurr was named to Team of the Week Bench for their performance in the club’s 1-1 draw against Charleston Battery March 18.
After Sacramento went down to 10 men, Gurr helped the club fight back to pull level. He netted the equalizing score in the 55th minute, his first goal of 2023. As forward Russell Cicerone advanced down the left flank, Gurr moved to fill space in Battery’s penalty area before tapping in a deflected cross. The goal was Gurr’s second scoring contribution in as many weeks after assisting the eventual winner on opening night on March 11. He also created three scoring chances.
Lopez helped the club threaten offensively throughout the match, finishing with five chances created – a game high for either club. He also completed 75% of his passes and won 8 of 11 one-on-one duels, helping Republic FC keep their foes out of net in the second half.
The selection is the first of Gurr’s career to the league’s weekly top squad, and Lopez’s 20th. In 2022, Lopez earned six selections to Team of the Week, including being named the August Player of the Month and Week 22 Player of the Week.
Republic FC is back in action this Saturday, March 25 when San Diego Loyal SC makes it’s only visit to Heart Health Park this season. Kickoff for the contest is set for 7:00 p.m., and the match will be broadcast live on Antenna TV 40.2, FOX40.com and the FOX40 App, and streaming on ESPN+.
