Sacramento, Calif. – Earlier today, the USL Championship announced that Republic FC goalkeeper Danny Vitiello’s 34th minute double-save against Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC on September 23 is nominated for Fan’s Choice Save of the Week for Week 29. Voting is open now at USLChampionship.com and on the league’s social channels through Friday, September 29 at 9:00 a.m. PT.
An all-out diving stop by Vitiello in the 34th minute denied a long-distance attempt from the hosts’ Drew Skundrich. After recovering, Vitiello charged to the right post to stop a follow up attempt from Colorado Springs Romario Williams with an equally impressive effort. A goal-line clearance from defender Jared Timmer kept Sacramento’s deficit to one goal in the first half.
This is Vitiello’s third nomination for the weekly fan vote this season, and the fourth by a Republic FC goalkeeper in 2023. Carlos Saldaña took home the honor for Week 26 Save of the Week with a diving save against Oakland Roots SC on September 2 – the club’s first win of the poll this season. Vitiello was last nominated for the league’s weekly top stop in Week 20 after a similar double-save against New Mexico United on the road.
Republic FC returns to Heart Health Park next Sunday afternoon to host Las Vegas Lights FC on Youth Soccer Day. Prior to the match, hundreds of youth players will get the opportunity to participate in the annual Youth Soccer Parade and walk the same field where the pros play. Kickoff is set for 4:00 p.m. and tickets are still available at SacRepublicFC.com/tickets. The match will also be broadcast live in English & Spanish on Antenna TV 40.2, FOX40.com, and the FOX40 News mobile app, as well as streaming on ESPN+.
