Sacramento, Calif. – Today, USL Championship announced that Republic FC goalkeeper Danny Vitiello’s stoppage time save at Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC on April 6 has been nominated for Fans’ Choice Save of the Week for Week 5. Voting is open now at USL Championship.com through Friday, April 12 at 9:00 a.m. PT.
The all-out diving effort preserved Republic FC’s shutout win late in the match. As Switchbacks FC sent numbers forward, Sacramento put bodies behind the ball to defend and keep its clean sheet intact. A shot from a Switchbacks FC attacker in traffic took an unlucky deflection and appeared headed for the left corner, but Vitiello’s outstretched hand kept the ball out of net.
This is Vitiello’s second consecutive nomination for the league’s weekly top stop. He won last week’s fan vote for a 79th minute denial in Republic FC’s 1-0 win over Memphis 901 FC on March 30. Republic FC has received recognition for every weekly league honor this week – forward Russell Cicerone was nominated for Goal of the Week and earned a spot on Team of the Week alongside defender Lee Desmond.
Fans can vote for Cicerone for Goal of the Week through Thursday at 9:00 a.m. PT, and Vitiello for Save of the Week through Friday at 9:00 a.m. PT at USLChampionship.com.
The Indomitable Club is back in Sacramento to defend home turf this Saturday, hosting Western Conference newcomer FC Tulsa at Heart Health Park. Since the start of the 2023 season, no club has been stronger at home than Republic FC, claiming 14 USL wins with a goal differential of +25 and 11 clean sheets. Kickoff for Saturday’s match is set for 7:00 p.m. PT and tickets are available now at SacRepublicFC.com/Tickets. The match will be broadcast live in English and Spanish on FOX40, Antenna TV 40.2 and streaming on FOX40.com, through the FOX40 News mobile app, and on ESPN+.
