On Saturday, June 29, Republic FC is teaming up with Wilton Rancheria to honor Native American Heritage and celebrate the profound impact of all of the Tribes that have called the Sacramento region home for centuries.
The first 2,000 fans in attendance will receive a special commemorative scarf designed by Chairman Andrew Alejandre from the Paskenta Band of Nomlaki Indians. He was invited by Wilton Rancheria – a tribe of primarily Miwok and Nisenan people – to lead the project as an opportunity to showcase the diversity of history and culture among Native American tribes across the region.
“The Miwok and Nisenan people have inhabited this region since time immemorial, but they are not alone here,” said Wilton Rancheria Chief of Staff Samantha Cypret. “There are Native people from Tribes across the nation who call this region home and tonight is a time to honor and celebrate everyone. Including Chairman Alejandre’s beautiful art on the scarf and other items is an exciting way to highlight some of the other Tribes in the Central California region.”
The key elements of the scarf were inspired by designs found in Native American basketry, which holds tremendous significance for Native people. The art of basket weaving has been perfected over thousands of years as they have been used for a wide range of purposes. The designs have been passed down from generation to generation, a common thread among the oldest inhabitants of the land.
Chairman Alejandre carries the basket-inspired details throughout the scarf, highlighted by a modern, unique take on Republic FC’s signature bear icon. The basket shapes also come together to create a soccer ball. The word “Indomitable” spreads across the scarf, reflecting the club’s core value as well as the unwavering determination shown by Native Tribes to carry on their legacy and culture in the face of challenges they’ve seen over thousands of years.
As a part of the Native American Heritage Night activations, Republic FC will honor leaders from Wilton Rancheria as well as other local tribes, and share the stories of their legacy and contributions throughout the Sacramento region. On the concourse, a special pop-up market will feature Native artists, jewelers, and more.
Kickoff is set for 8:00 p.m. as Republic FC takes on Hartford Athletic and tickets are available now at SacRepublicFC.com/Tickets.
