Today, USL Championship announced that Republic FC goalkeeper Danny Vitiello has been nominated for the Fans’ Choice Week 23 Save of the Week for this 85th minute stop in Saturday’s match at Louisville City FC. Voting is open now through 9:00 a.m. PT on Friday, August 16 at USLChampionship.com.
With Republic FC and Louisville City FC even late in the match, a quick reaction from Vitiello denied LouCity’s Niall McCabe the game-winner in the 85th minute. After Adrien Perez lofted in a cross from the right flank, McCabe got his head on the ball on the edge of the six-yard box and redirected it toward goal. Vitiello flew into the air to get his right hand on the ball before it was headed out for a corner.
Vitiello leads the league with six Save of the Week wins this season, including four straight in May and June. Including this week’s nomination, he has been up for the honor eight times. He currently leads all goalkeepers with 10 clean sheets – two back from his career high for single-season shutouts, set last year.
Vitiello and Republic FC are back in action tomorrow night, hosting El Paso Locomotive FC on $2 Beer Night. Kickoff from Heart Health Park is at 7:30 p.m. and tickets are available now at SacRepublicFC.com/Tickets. The match will also be broadcast live on CBS Sports Network, the third straight national TV contest for the club.
