In his 400th career appearance, Lee Desmond made his mark on the scoreboard with a sneaky header goal against Sporting Club Jacksonville on August 1st to contribute to Republic FC’s momentous 5-0 finish.
Since joining the Indomitable Club in 2022, Desmond has played a key role in some of the team’s biggest moments, from the historic run to the Open Cup Final, to multiple playoff appearances and hosting the 2025 USL Cup Final. But before playing a role in some of the club’s biggest moments, Lee’s career journey leads back to his native Ireland, where created a lasting legacy of resilience and leadership.
After the game, we caught up with the Team Captain to reflect on his career and what he has taken away from his longstanding appearances across his career.
How does it feel to have scored in your 400th appearance in your career?
What a coincidence to score on a big milestone like that. 400 is a nice number, but I definitely have at least another 100 in my head. I just felt during the week that the way Memo was crossing the ball in, that if I made contact, I would have a good chance.
Do you have a favorite career moment?
My favorite game was my last game in Ireland [with St. Patrick’s Athletic on November 28, 2021] when we won the [Football Association of Ireland] National Cup in front of 40,000 people. That’s my best game so far, but I think there’s another big one underway, hopefully with Sac Republic.
What would you tell your younger self about your first career appearance?
I would tell myself, get ready for a big roller coaster, you’re going to have to be mentally strong, and you’re going to have to work your ass off every single day. It’s just full of ups and downs, but half of the battle is just sticking in it every day and giving it your all.
How do you motivate the younger players on this team who don’t have as much experience on the field as you do?
I think you just got to be patient with them, make them feel really welcome, but also let them know that there’s a standard that has to be met every day, on and off the field. And I have to say, the academy guys that are in with us every day really do have a top attitude. I think there are a lot of senior pros at the club, and there have been over the years that give these guys a good education and a good platform to go on and have a successful career.
Is there anything in your career that you would change?
Maybe that’s a question for when I retire, because I think everything happens for a reason. I did make some strange decisions when I was younger like staying at clubs and not transferring, but I also maybe wouldn’t have come here if I hadn’t made those decisions, and coming here was the best decision I ever made. So I’m really grateful for that and I wouldn’t change too much.
