Republic FC’s four-match league undefeated stretch comes to an end on a 1-0 loss to FC Tulsa. The Quails failed to pick up a point in league play for the first time since June 20 on a rescheduled, mid-week match. It was a tightly-contested defensive battle between the top two Western Conference teams from last year, but ultimately Tulsa took advantage of its one opportunity to even the season series between the two clubs.
Republic FC set the tone early with three shots on target in the opening minutes. Just before the one minute mark, Memo Rodriguez sent a high cross to the far post where Lee Desmond put a header to the corner. But Tulsa goalkeeper Dane Jacomen stretched all the way out to keep the ball out. Then in the eighth minute, the club built out of pressure on the right flank. Jack Gurr curled a pass down the line, where Tyler Wolff ran onto it for a shot that was swallowed up by the keeper.
Blake Willey tried his luck in the 10th minute as the ball bounced around on the top of the box. It fell for Willey, who put a shot on frame through traffic, but again Jacomen hit the deck to make the save.
Both sides would settle in, and it would take until the 41st minute for either side to put another shot on target. This time it was Tulsa’s Logan Dorsey who found enough space for a shot from the top of the box, but Danny Vitiello held his line to record his first save of the night.
Halftime sub Kyle Edwards nearly added to his scoring tally in the 53rd minute when Danny Crisostomo sent a long ball forward. Edwards beat his defender on the run to loft a one-touch volley that went just over the crossbar.
As both teams looked to find their rhythm in the second half, Tulsa’s Stefan Lukic chipped a ball to Jamie Webber on the far side. Webber brought the ball down with a touch and put a low shot in the back of the net for the only goal of the night. .
Vitiello kept the game within reach in the 89th minute as Jamie Webber slotted a pass to Kalil ElMedkhar, who had his eyes on goal. But in came Vitiello, who quickly cut off the angle and kick the ball away.
The Indomitable Club will head further east to take on defending league champion Pittsburgh Riverhounds on Saturday. That match from F.N.B. Stadium in Pittsburgh kicks off at 4:00 p.m. PT and will be available streaming on FOX40+ and ESPN+.
