Republic FC extends its undefeated streak to four matches, picking up a point in a 1-1 draw on the road against Monterey Bay FC on Saturday night. Down a goal in the second half, Sacramento’s subs changed the game as Kyle Edwards and Cal Jennings connected to even the score line. Jennings nets his first goal for the club in his second appearance for The Quails.
Sacramento nearly found the opening goal in the 12th minute. Tyler Wolff drove the down ball through the middle and popped out a pass to Jack Gurr on the right. Gurr’s cross was controlled by Blake Willey, who then had to make a quick turn for an outside-of-the-foot shot that missed the target by inches.
In the 37th minute, Danny Crisostomo brought down a corner kick that was punched away by the keeper, and sent a low, dangerous shot toward goal that was blocked by a defender at the last second.
But despite Republic FC taking its chances going forward, it was Monterey Bay FC who struck first in the 44th minute when a cross from Fidel Barajas was headed down to the corner by Omari Glasgow.
The Quails began to build some momentum as second half substitutes started to put their mark on the game. The pressure continued as the match progressed and the Indomitable Club equalized in the 84th minute. Jack Gurr whipped in a cross for Memo Rodriguez to head back to Kyle Edwards. Instead of going for goal, Edwards unselfishly put a bicycle-kick pass forward for Cal Jennings, who beat the keeper to the spot and headed the ball over the line. Jennings gets his first goal for Republic FC after joining the club earlier in the month, while Edwards records his third assist of the season.
After the equalizer, it was all Republic, as The Quails looked to steal the points late. They controlled 65% of the possession, rallied off five shots, and spent the majority of the final minutes in Monterey Bay’s defensive third, but ultimately the match would end level.
Republic FC closes out its two game road stretch with a trip to SoCal to take on Orange County SC on September 5. That match from Championship Soccer Stadium in Irvine, California kicks off at 7:00 p.m. and will be available streaming on ESPN+ and FOX40+.
