Republic FC is now undefeated in five matches as the club pulled off another late-game comeback to earn a 1-1 draw on the road against Orange County SC. Sacramento dominated for much of the night, forcing Orange County to capitalize on its only dangerous play of the night. But as the hosts hunkered down to try to protect their one-goal lead, Republic FC equalized from the corner when substitute Aaron Essel netted his first goal for Sacramento.
Republic FC put Orange County under early pressure and nearly hit the back of the net in the fourth minute. A corner kick was deflected to Blake Willey, who looked to put a quick shot on goal, but the attempt was blocked and the ball went out wide to Memo Rodriguez. Memo whipped in a cross to Cal Jennings for a header at the front post, but the attempt didn’t hit the target.
It looked like Republic FC took the lead in the sixth minute when Ryan Spaulding slotted a through ball to Tyler Wolff who was in on goal, but the play was called offside. Sacramento had another chance in the 18th minute. Again it was Ryan Spaulding making things happen as he split the defenders and put in a cross to Blake Willey, but this time the volley went just over the crossbar.
Orange County had their first shot on goal in the 22nd minute as Chris Hegardt broke out on the left flank. He sent a pass forward to Lyam MacKinnon who was cutting across the top of the box. MacKinnon’s put a one-touch shot on frame, but Danny Vitiello was there to easily make the stop.
Ryan Spaulding tried his luck with an attempt on goal in the 28th minute. Memo Rodriguez’s corner kick was flicked to Spaulding on the far edge of the 18-yard box, and he fired off a one-touch shot that just glanced the post and went out for a goal kick.
Despite The Quails maintaining 65% of possession and carrying nearly all of the momentum in the first half, the match went into the halftime break with both sides scoreless.
After sustaining some early pressure by OC, Sacramento got things going again on the other side of the break. In the 53rd minute, Memo Rodriguez lofted a ball to the far side for Cal Jennings, who headed a dangerous ball across the face of goal. OC goalkeeper Alex Rando got a small touch to the ball, pushing it just high enough to get over the head of Republic FC’s Danny Crisistomo who was crashing the back post.
Orange County opened the scoring in the 61st minute. Ryan Doghman controlled the ball on the left flank and sent a cross to Chris Hegardt, who got in between defenders and found the back of the net.
Republic FC quickly responded. In the 67th minute, Lee Desmond split the defense with a pass forward to Tim Leibold. With the ball at his feet for the first time after subbing on just a minute earlier, Leibold found Memo Rodriguez at the top of the box. Memo crossed over his defender to get the ball on his left foot for a low shot, but the ball curled just wide of the post.
Another corner kick created a chance for Sacramento to equalize in the 80th minute. Memo Rodriguez’s long ball became a 50/50 ball for Kyle Edwards and OC goalkeeper Alex Rando. Both players got to the ball at the same time, allowing the ball to fall to Alfredo Midence for a close range shot, but Rando was there to make the save.
With so many opportunities coming from the corner, Republic FC finally cashed in with a fantastic set piece in the 83rd minute. An in-swinging corner from Memo Rodriguez was volleyed into the goal by Aaron Essel, just two minutes after the Ghanaian utilityman subbed in. It’s the first goal of the season for Essel, while Memo gets his team-leading fifth assist.
With the momentum of the equalizer, the Indomitable Club continued its barrage of late chances, continuing to threaten until the final whistle before the match ended with a share of the points.
