Republic FC’s undefeated streak has hit double digits and for the third time in eight days, the Indomitable Club has come from behind to earn a positive result in a 1-1 draw on the road against FC Tulsa on Saturday night. Tulsa took an early lead from the penalty spot, but The Quails continued to hunt for the equalizer and in the 89th minute, Memo Rodriguez hit a beauty of a free kick from 25 yards out.
The hosts got on the board early as Lucas Stauffer was brought down in the box and midseason acquisition Arquimides Ordonez stepped up to the spot. Danny Vitiello read the penalty correctly and dove left, but the low shot was just past his fingertips. This would be Tulsa’s one and only shot on target all night.
The Indomitable Club had its best chance of the half just before the break. Ryan Spaulding broke out in stride on the left wing and sent a fantastic cross to Danny Crisostomo on the far post. Crisostomo went airborne for a one-touch volley that went over the goal line for what appeared to be the equalizer, but the goal was called off due to a foul by Kyle Edwards.
Republic FC picked it up on the other side of halftime. Coming off the bench, Jack Gurr had an instant impact on the match as he pushed through traffic to lay the ball off for Forster Ajago. Ajago fired a shot from the top of the box that forced goalkeeper Dane Jacomen to make a save. The rebound reached Kyle Edwards who used his left foot for a one-touch shot, but the attempt went wide of the target.
Sacramento had another good chance in the 60th minute. Jared Timmer sent a through ball to Blake Willey, who did well to keep the ball at his feet as the defender came in for a tackle. Willey’s cross was headed away by a defender, but only got as far as Memo Rodriguez at the top of the box. Memo swung on a one-touch volley, but this time it went over the crossbar. Moments later, Kyle Edwards once again tested the goalkeeper. Memo nutmegged his defender with a backheel, and Edwards controlled the ball before sending in a shot that was blocked.
Republic FC continued to build its attack as substitutes stepped onto the pitch. In the 85th minute, Cal Jennings redirected a cross from Michel Benitez. The attempt was low and on target, but the keeper was there to collect it.
But the Indomitable Club’s spirit persevered. Memo Rodriguez was brought down outside the box in the 89th minute and with a free kick at his feet, the reigning Player of the Week found the equalizer as his shot sailed through the wall and into the corner of the net. Memo has now scored six goals this season, including four in the last three games.
