Republic FC and SchoolsFirst Federal Credit Union are proud to recognize the newest recipients of the Indomitable Educators award, celebrating the dedicated teachers and school employees who go above and beyond to make a lasting impact on their students, schools, and communities.
Maria Rugama

Rugama is an ELA/ELD teacher at Galt High School and is committed to ensuring every student feels supported, valued, and empowered. From serving as a mentor and club advisor, to advocating for underrepresented students, she works tirelessly to create opportunities for students to succeed both inside and outside the classroom.
“Ms. Rugama understands that students don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care,” said Galt High School Principal Kellie Beck. “Her most important quality is her empowerment of student voices. Through her academic support, mentorship, and club involvement, she encourages her students to stand and be heard.”
“I want my students to know that I believe in them and that I see them,” said Rugama. “I want them to find their voice and to use it to defend and support those who do not have one yet. I want them to know that I am proud of them for who they are and who they will become.”
Alma Sibaja
Sibaja is a Kitchen Manager at Bridgeway Island Elementary School in West Sacramento and plays a vital role in her school community. Serving more than 500 students each day, her work goes far beyond preparing meals.
“Alma brings care, flexibility, and high standards to the Bridgeway Island kitchen every day,” said her nominator. “Whether she is coordinating meals for incoming sixth graders, responding quickly during an unexpected lunchtime fire alarm evacuation, or making sure students receive a hot meal on time, Alma and her kitchen team always find a way to make it happen and provide meals that help students feel cared for.”
For Alma, preparing food is her way of contributing to a supportive school environment: “I want my students to know that they are loved valued and cared for. When I cook for more than 500 students each day I’m not just preparing meals. I’m showing them that they matter. I hope they always remember.”
Nicki Clark
Clark is a Yard Duty Supervisor at Southport Elementary School who demonstrates the immense impact that a positive attitude can have on students.
“From morning drop-off to recess, lunch and every transition in between, Ms. Nicki brings a calm presence, cheerful energy and a caring hand to Southport’s students. Her strong relationships with students help make big school transitions, especially the move from kindergarten to first grade, a little easier.”

On what inspires her to approach her work with this level of care, Clark explains: “My biggest inspirations are my daughters. Watching them grow reminds me every day how resilient and curious kids really are. Being a mom completely shapes my work—whenever I’m with a student, I just try to give them the exact same patience, love, and encouragement I’d want for my own girls.”
And when it comes to the students at Southport, Ms. Nicki’s love for them is clear. “I want my students to know that we are a team, and there is absolutely no place I’d rather be than right here with them! They completely make my day with their silly faces and funny dances, and I want them to know how deeply I care about each and every one of them. Whenever they have a tough day, I will always, always be right here to comfort them. We laugh together, we learn together, and I will always be their biggest fan!”
