Few moments in Republic FC history evoke as much emotion as the club’s astonishing comeback win during the 2014 USL Semifinal against bitter rivals LA Galaxy II.
With Republic FC down 0-2 in the second half, midfielder Rodrigo Lopez put the team on his back and scored three consecutive goals—including a sublime free kick during stoppage time—to take his side into the USL Cup Final where he was named the match MVP. The rest, as the say, is indomitable history.
On Saturday, September 8th, fans will be able to relive the “Miracle at Bonney” as the club continues to celebrate its fifth anniversary. Republic FC will be hosting its fourth of five #5YearsOfGlory Nights this season with a special appearance from the man who helped orchestrate the incredible comeback. Lopez will be taking part in a prematch meet-and-greet with season ticket members, as well as a fan Q&A in the Market before kickoff against Seattle Sounders FC 2.
Signed as Republic FC’s first player in 2013, Lopez quickly became a fan-favorite. The Guadalajara, Mexico, native was part of the championship-winning team and holds the club’s all-time record for most assists (19). Up until recently, he held the all-time scoring record, as well.
Lopez left the club ahead of the 2016 season to join Celaya FC in Mexico’s Ascenso MX where he has scored six goals and recorded six assists from 42 appearances across all competitions. He also spent the 2017 season on loan with Liga MX’s Deportivo Toluca, making 12 appearances and scoring one goal in that span.
