To honor the start of Black History Month, Republic FC is teaming up the Capital Black Chamber of Commerce to invest in and recognize the next generation of changemakers. The community partners are now accepting applications for the Black Excellence Scholarship. Students can begin applying for the $1,000 grant now at SacRepublicFC.com/Scholarship.

“For the last five years, this scholarship has been about recognizing students who are already leading the way… academically, as leaders, and as contributors to their communities,” said Scott Moak, Republic FC Vice President of Business Operations and Community Affairs. “Black History Month gives us an opportunity to honor that legacy and recommit to the work ahead by investing in young people who are actively changing our community for the better and helping shape a future.”

“The Capital Black Chamber of Commerce is proud to once again partner with Republic FC to offer this annual scholarship and expand access to opportunity for students across our region,” said Azizza Davis Goines, President and CEO of the Capital Black Chamber of Commerce. “By working together, we’re helping to remove barriers and supporting the next generation as they take meaningful steps toward their future.”

Applicants must be currently enrolled at an eligible high school or in a minimum of six units at a California Community College, and intend to enroll in a four-year college or university, or a California Community College (minimum 12 units). Additionally, they must live in the six-county Sacramento region. Applications must be submitted by Friday, February 20 at 11:59 p.m. A special committee of black leaders including Sacramento City Councilmember Rick Jennings, select Republic FC players, and last year’s Black Excellence scholarship recipient Kameesha Scott will help select the winner.

The Black Excellence Scholarship kicks off the club’s annual Republic Rising Scholars series, which has awarded nearly $20,000 to standout students since 2019. Throughout the year, the club will partner with various community partners, including the Sacramento Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and The Sacramento LGBT Community Center, to extend the program and support students who often face significant challenges in pursuing a higher education.

Since 1984, the Capital Black Chamber of Commerce has worked to bring African American business owners and professionals together to create a solid economic structure within Sacramento’s business community. Through the Young Leadership Collaboration program, the chamber invests in the region’s next generation of leaders, helping people ages 16-23 to develop the necessary skills to succeed through personal finance training, exploration into the world of entrepreneurship, business mentorships, and scholarships – including the annual scholarship presented with Republic FC.

The recipient will be recognized during halftime of Republic FC’s season opener on March 7 and receive a VIP ticket package to celebrate with friends and family. Republic FC’s newest community futsal court will soon come alive with color, motion, and creativity thanks to local artist Brandon Alxndr. His bold, abstract design will transform the playing surface at Walerga Park into a vibrant space that reflects both the energy of the game and the spirit of the community. 

Developed in partnership with the Sunrise Recreation & Park District and Citrus Heights Arts, the new futsal and basketball court will officially open during Republic FC’s Annual Playoff Week of Service, ahead of the club’s November 2 playoff match. Alxndr will begin painting the court next week.  

“I chose this abstract design to make the court feel more interactive—it complements the gameplay and adds energy to the space,” said Alxndr. “I want to help bring color and creativity to a community that deserves more attention and uplifting spaces.” 

Since 2019, Republic FC and its partners have built more than a dozen futsal courts across the region, turning underused areas into free, safe, and welcoming spaces for people of all ages to play. Each court blends sport, art, and community to promote health, connection, and creativity. 

Together, these courts are expected to host nearly 200,000 annual players across the Sacramento region, offering easy access to recreation for families who might not otherwise have a safe place to play. 

Republic FC’s community court initiative is made possible in part by the club’s fans. A percentage of every stadium seat deposit goes directly toward funding new futsal courts across the region—meaning every supporter who joins the Indomitable Club helps expand access to the game. On Monday, Republic FC’s front office swapped their office laptops for garden gloves, heading to Mirasol Village Community Garden for a morning of service in honor of Indigenous People’s Day.

In partnership with Alchemist Community Development Corporation, the Indomitable staff lent a hand with garden maintenance at one of Sacramento’s most unique green spaces. The Mirasol Village Community Garden is the largest city-owned garden in Sacramento and was established to support the residents of the Mirasol Village. Opened just last year, this is a transit-oriented, mixed-income community located in Sacramento’s River District just on the edge of the Railyards where construction for Republic FC’s new stadium is underway. 

The club’s volunteer day focused on weeding, clearing out planting beds, and prepping the space for winter, all in support of Alchemist CDC’s mission to make healthy, sustainable living accessible for everyone.  

Each September, in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, Republic FC partners with the Sacramento Hispanic Chamber of Commerce to shine a spotlight on local student achievements, helping pave the way for future leaders. 

Kevin Ramos, a first-generation college student pursuing a bachelor’s degree in construction management at California State University, Sacramento, was honored in front of a packed house at Republic FC’s Noche Latina match on October 1.  

“What matters most to me is my family, education, and building a strong foundation for my future career and personal life. My parents’ sacrifices inspire me daily, and I want to honor them while setting an example for my younger siblings,” says Kevin. “Education has always been central to my vision of the future, and I strive not only to succeed academically but also to apply what I learn to make a tangible difference in my community.”  

Growing up in a low-income household, Kevin learned early the value of persistence and keeping a positive outlook. Watching his parents work tirelessly shaped his professional values, instilling the principles of hard work, humility and faith.   

“From a young age, I understood that education would be my path to a better future, not just for myself, but for my family. What I want most to convey is that I am driven, motivated, and committed to breaking the cycle by becoming the first college graduate in my family.”  

Kevin’s interest in construction management started at a young age when he began working in home remodeling with his uncle. On this experience, Kevin said, “I realized the incredible opportunities within construction management and saw how leadership, planning, and teamwork could transform projects.” while gaining experience working part-time at a general contracting company.   

Beyond academics, he shows a strong dedication to his passion and his peers. He serves as an officer for the Sacramento State Construction Management Student Association, bridging the gap between aspiring students and other industry professionals. Kevin says that “Helping others has strengthened my confidence, enhanced my communication and organizational skills, and inspired me to create opportunities for students and community members alike.”  

Receiving this scholarship is more than financial support for Kevin. It is an investment in his dreams and his path. The award allows him to dedicate more time to his studies and pursue his education. Most importantly, it brings Kevin closer to honoring his family’s sacrifices, excelling in his studies and beginning a stellar career.   

Kevin’s scholarship application reflects the same values he demonstrates through his leadership and community involvement, highlighting his mentorship of first-generation students as well as his commitment to building and fostering professional connections. His application demonstrates not only how he pursues his own academic and career goals but also opens opportunities for others to succeed.  

Since 2019, Republic FC and the Sacramento Hispanic Chamber of Commerce have continued to celebrate young leaders, highlighting the impact of education and community involvement.

For twelve-year-old Alex Ramos, a difficult day marked the beginning of something extraordinary.

A few weeks ago, Alex and his family arrived at UC Davis Health for what would be his first hospital admission—the start of a daunting journey: chemotherapy treatment for an unexpected diagnosis of childhood cancer.

But on that same overwhelming day, something unexpected happened.

“It just so happened that there were Sacramento Republic FC players at the hospital,” said Alex’s father, Sam Ramos. “It was a big day for him… so it was a nice, positive thing. The players were super cool, and that made him really excited about this opportunity.”

That chance meeting turned out to be the start of a powerful bond.

Later that summer, Alex and his father were invited to Republic FC’s headquarters downtown for a memorable event filled with artistic creativity, and uplifting encouragement. There, they were welcomed by first team players Jared Mazzola and Justin Portillo, and local graphic artist Gregory Berger, who joined forces to help Alex design two unique pairs of custom cleats.

With the help of the players, Alex poured his love for all things sports into two incredible cleat designs—designs that Berger has now brought to life as one-of-a-kind boots.

“He’s just a sports fanatic—all sports, really,” said Alex’s father. “He plays a lot of different sports, but he really enjoys soccer. He just really enjoys the competition, and everything that sports brings—that’s his life.”

To kick off Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, Republic FC, in partnership with UC Davis Health, is hosting Superhero Night on Saturday, September 13 at Heart Health Park.

“Republic FC being involved in the community in the way they are is so important,” said goalkeeper Jared Mazzola. “Letting Alex and his family know that we are here for them no matter what is probably the most important thing we could do during this time.”

It’s children like Alex—strong, spirited, and unshakably brave—that spark inspiration and remind us all who the real superheroes are. Republic FC proudly stands with families and healthcare heroes who face the fight against childhood cancer every day.

Alex’s customized cleats will be worn by Mazzola and Portillo ahead of Saturday’s Superhero Night match. The auction is now live for the personalized, player-worn cleats, and bidding will be available until September 30th at 12:00 p.m. All auction proceeds will go to St. Baldrick’s Foundation – a volunteer and donor powered charity committed to supporting the most promising research to find cures for childhood cancers and give survivors long and healthy lives.

Ahead of the September 15 kickoff of Hispanic Heritage Month, Republic FC and the Sacramento Hispanic Chamber of Commerce are now accepting applications for the annual El Futuro Scholarship. The partners have teamed up every year since 2019 to award a local student a $1,000 grant to support their academic journey. The winner will be announced at the club’s annual Noche Latina celebration on Wednesday, October 1. Applications are now being accepted at SacRepublicFC.com/scholarships.

“At Republic FC, we believe education is the ultimate goal and El Futuro helps students score it,” said Republic FC Vice President of Community Investment Scott Moak. “None of this would be possible without the amazing partners who step up alongside us to invest in our youth and their future success.”

“Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to uplift the stories, achievements, and leadership of those shaping our community’s future,” said Cathy Rodriguez Aguirre, SACHCC President and CEO. “Through our partnership with Republic FC, we are investing in students pursuing higher education, helping build a stronger, more diverse workforce for years to come.”

Applicants must be currently enrolled at an eligible high school or in a minimum of six units at a California Community College, and intend to enroll in a four-year college or university, or a California Community College (minimum 12 units). Additionally, they must be of Hispanic origin and live in the six-county Sacramento region. Applications close at 5:00 p.m. PT on Friday, September 19. Last year, Republic FC and the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce awarded the scholarship to Larisa Rosales, who shared her passion for Mexican Folklórico dance during the halftime ceremony.

Her interest in sharing and connecting with her Mexican heritage led her to pursue study anthropology at UC Davis. “I discovered my love for Mexican folklórico when I was in 7th grade,” said Rosales. “My first year of dancing was just for fun because I enjoyed dancing and took great pride in my Mexican identity.” 

Republic FC will celebrated cultures from across Latin America on Noche Latina. Upon arriving at Heart Health Park, fans can browse an artisan market featuring local hispanic and latino vendors. Music and dance will also be a central part of the celebrations, with multiple groups and styles set to make an appearance before the match begins. Javier Arellano will also be co-emceeing the match alongside Republic FC’s Connor Sutton.

Since 2019, Republic FC has worked with various community partners – including SACHCC, the Capital Black Chamber of Commerce, and the Sacramento LGBT Community Center – on its Rising Scholars Series. The program has awarded nearly $20,000 to young people showing exceptional scholastic leadership and community involvement.
