One-of-a-kind Cleats Driving Awareness for Childhood Cancer

For twelve-year-old Alex Ramos, a difficult day marked the beginning of something extraordinary.

A few weeks ago, Alex and his family arrived at UC Davis Health for what would be his first hospital admission—the start of a daunting journey: chemotherapy treatment for an unexpected diagnosis of childhood cancer.

But on that same overwhelming day, something unexpected happened.

“It just so happened that there were Sacramento Republic FC players at the hospital,” said Alex’s father, Sam Ramos. “It was a big day for him… so it was a nice, positive thing. The players were super cool, and that made him really excited about this opportunity.”

That chance meeting turned out to be the start of a powerful bond.

Later that summer, Alex and his father were invited to Republic FC’s headquarters downtown for a memorable event filled with artistic creativity, and uplifting encouragement. There, they were welcomed by first team players Jared Mazzola and Justin Portillo, and local graphic artist Gregory Berger, who joined forces to help Alex design two unique pairs of custom cleats.

With the help of the players, Alex poured his love for all things sports into two incredible cleat designs—designs that Berger has now brought to life as one-of-a-kind boots.

“He’s just a sports fanatic—all sports, really,” said Alex’s father. “He plays a lot of different sports, but he really enjoys soccer. He just really enjoys the competition, and everything that sports brings—that’s his life.”

To kick off Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, Republic FC, in partnership with UC Davis Health, is hosting Superhero Night on Saturday, September 13 at Heart Health Park.

“Republic FC being involved in the community in the way they are is so important,” said goalkeeper Jared Mazzola. “Letting Alex and his family know that we are here for them no matter what is probably the most important thing we could do during this time.”

It’s children like Alex—strong, spirited, and unshakably brave—that spark inspiration and remind us all who the real superheroes are. Republic FC proudly stands with families and healthcare heroes who face the fight against childhood cancer every day.

Alex’s customized cleats will be worn by Mazzola and Portillo ahead of Saturday’s Superhero Night match. The auction is now live for the personalized, player-worn cleats, and bidding will be available until September 30th at 12:00 p.m. All auction proceeds will go to St. Baldrick’s Foundation – a volunteer and donor powered charity committed to supporting the most promising research to find cures for childhood cancers and give survivors long and healthy lives.

Applications Now Open for 2025 El Futuro Hispanic Heritage Month Scholarship

Ahead of the September 15 kickoff of Hispanic Heritage Month, Republic FC and the Sacramento Hispanic Chamber of Commerce are now accepting applications for the annual El Futuro Scholarship. The partners have teamed up every year since 2019 to award a local student a $1,000 grant to support their academic journey. The winner will be announced at the club’s annual Noche Latina celebration on Wednesday, October 1. Applications are now being accepted at SacRepublicFC.com/scholarships.

“At Republic FC, we believe education is the ultimate goal and El Futuro helps students score it,” said Republic FC Vice President of Community Investment Scott Moak. “None of this would be possible without the amazing partners who step up alongside us to invest in our youth and their future success.”

“Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to uplift the stories, achievements, and leadership of those shaping our community’s future,” said Cathy Rodriguez Aguirre, SACHCC President and CEO. “Through our partnership with Republic FC, we are investing in students pursuing higher education, helping build a stronger, more diverse workforce for years to come.”

Applicants must be currently enrolled at an eligible high school or in a minimum of six units at a California Community College, and intend to enroll in a four-year college or university, or a California Community College (minimum 12 units). Additionally, they must be of Hispanic origin and live in the six-county Sacramento region. Applications close at 5:00 p.m. PT on Friday, September 19. Last year, Republic FC and the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce awarded the scholarship to Larisa Rosales, who shared her passion for Mexican Folklórico dance during the halftime ceremony.

Her interest in sharing and connecting with her Mexican heritage led her to pursue study anthropology at UC Davis. “I discovered my love for Mexican folklórico when I was in 7th grade,” said Rosales. “My first year of dancing was just for fun because I enjoyed dancing and took great pride in my Mexican identity.”

Republic FC will celebrated cultures from across Latin America on Noche Latina. Upon arriving at Heart Health Park, fans can browse an artisan market featuring local hispanic and latino vendors. Music and dance will also be a central part of the celebrations, with multiple groups and styles set to make an appearance before the match begins. Javier Arellano will also be co-emceeing the match alongside Republic FC’s Connor Sutton.

Since 2019, Republic FC has worked with various community partners – including SACHCC, the Capital Black Chamber of Commerce, and the Sacramento LGBT Community Center – on its Rising Scholars Series. The program has awarded nearly $20,000 to young people showing exceptional scholastic leadership and community involvement.

Calling All Artists: Be a Part of Republic FC’s Newest Community Mini-Pitch Project

This fall, Republic FC is teaming up with the Sunrise Recreation & Park District and Citrus Arts Heights to open the region’s newest multi-use sport court at Walerga Park.

The partners are now accepting applications for artists and muralists to submit their designs for the project, which will be used for both futsal and basketball. Artists from zip codes closest to Walerga Park (95841 and 95842) are encouraged to apply, but applications from across the region will be considered.

To align with the goals of the project, designs should be inclusive and dynamic, as well as reflective of the cultural vibrancy of North Sacramento. Artists aged 18 years and older can submit their designs and work samples now through September 10 at 5:00 PM. Unique artwork is a special way that Republic FC has been able to connect its community futsal courts to the neighborhoods they serve. In 2020, the club unveiled the refurbished Carrillo Courts at Northgate Park featuring twin murals created by local artist Marco Estrada. Over 50% of Northgate residents are of Hispanic heritage, inspiring Estrada to include elements of Mexican culture in his design to serve as a reminder of the diversity of the community and the continued to commitment to learning about different cultures and traditions.

The Walerga Park Court will be the 13^th futsal court opened by Republic FC and its partners since 2019. The club’s focus is on transforming unused, dilapidated courts into safe spaces for the community to gather and play, creating equitable access to the sport. Over 3,500 fans through the club’s new stadium deposit campaign have contributed to the funding and development of the new court – with more court projects in development.

Get to know 49er United: Republic FC’s newest Youth Club Partner

Republic FC is expanding its reach in the Sacramento area, partnering with youth club 49er United.

Republic FC’s youth partner program provides exclusive first team and academy experiences through private camps and clinics with professional level training for partnered clubs.

Based out of Auburn 49er United dual-affiliates with both Cal-North and NorCal Premier. A key part of the Republic FC/49er United partnership is the youth club’s commitment to community.

Republic FC spoke with 49er United President Sarah Moulton about the clubs’ upcoming partnership and the opportunities it brings.

1. What are you looking forward to with this partnership?

We’re incredibly excited to partner with Republic FC because it opens up opportunities for our players, coaches, and families to connect with the highest levels of the sport right here in our community. This partnership brings access to elite training, mentorship from professionals, and a direct line to what it takes to succeed on and off the field. We’re looking forward to growing the game together and inspiring our players with a clear pathway from grassroots to the professional level.

2. What impact will this have on kids in the program?

This partnership will be transformative for our players. It gives them role models they can see in action, mentorship opportunities with top-level athletes, and exposure to the values and discipline of professional soccer. For many, it will light a spark of belief that they can achieve big dreams—and show them how to work toward those goals with commitment, character, and community.

The clubs kicked off their partnership earlier this month, as Sac Republic Youth Programming staff provided training to over 20 coaches from around the Sacramento area. As Republic FC’s and 49er United’s fall seasons get underway, Republic FC will continue to provide support to the dedicated coaches who volunteer their time for their clubs.

Republic FC Wraps Up First-Ever Youth Summer Court Series

Back in 2019, Republic FC, in partnership with Bank of America and La Familia Counseling Center, transformed two weathered and unused tennis courts into the club’s first public futsal courts.

Since its opening, the revitalized surfaces at Maple Park have been providing a space for the community to come together and play the great game.

This summer, the vibrant Old Glory Red courts were able to host the club’s inaugural Youth Summer Court Series—a program aimed at engaging local youth through the fast-paced, skill-building sport of futsal.

From June 25 to July 30, kids ages 8 to 14 gathered every Wednesday to participate in a fast-paced, small-sided (typically five vs. five) version of soccer on a basketball-sized court and played with smaller soccer balls. The session exposed participants to quick-thinking, precision passing and sharp technical skills, similar to that of the world’s beautiful game.“We mostly want to continue to use the futsal courts for what they were intended for, to further develop our connections to the communities around us, as well as to help young players fall in love with soccer and keep playing as much as possible,” says Republic FC Youth Soccer Programming Manager, Filip Handl.

Nearly 60 kids participated in the program, led by Republic FC’s youth coaching staff. The series provided an opportunity for players to grow their skills, stay active, and enjoy the game during their summer break.

“We wanted to rally the community together and get kids outside and playing sports this summer while they are not in school getting PE classes or recess to stay active,” says Handl.

Republic FC defender Michel Benítez also made a special appearance for the last session, where participants got to play side-by-side and learn some skills from a member of the first team.

Following the positive results from this summer’s turnout, the futsal courts at Maple Park have proven to be a successful host for Republic FC programs. “The club has high hopes to integrate and utilize its futsal courts more…beyond just youth programs, but opportunities for adults and the greater community as well,” says Handl.

Republic FC’s futsal courts are more than just a place to play—they’re a growing hub for connection, activity, and shared love for the game.

Volunteer. Connect. Celebrate: Republic FC Watch Party at At Ease Brewing

Republic FC fans are invited to come together for a night of service and soccer on Saturday July 26, as the club partners with Nation’s Finest to support military veterans and their families. The event doubles as an official watch party for Republic FC’s USL Jägermeister Cup group stage finale against Spokane Velocity.

The night begins at 6:00 p.m. at At Ease Brewing (1825 I St), where volunteers will assemble sensory kits for veterans participating in Nation’s Finest programs. These kits are designed to support veterans in transitional housing, mental health and wellness, employment services, and more. Each kit will include calming and practical items, such as sunglasses, fidget spinners, and squish balls, along with helpful resources and handwritten notes from fans to show appreciation and support.

No supplies are needed — everything will be provided. All you need to bring is your heart for service and your Republic FC spirit.

Then at 7:00 p.m., the focus shifts to the pitch as fans gather around to watch Republic FC take on Spokane Velocity. The brewery will be showing the game live, making this the perfect opportunity to give back and cheer on the boys in Old Glory Red alongside fellow supporters.

At Ease Brewing is a Veteran-and family-owned Midtown gem, founded in 2019 by retired Army Colonel Mike Conrad. Known for its relaxed, welcoming vibe and rotating lineup of craft brews — from IPAs to sours to stouts — At Ease is also a proud partner of Republic FC and can be found on matchdays at Heart Health Park’s Craft Brew Bar.

On Saturday fans can also try freshly baked Bánh Mì filled with savory Filipino meats and ingredients, that can be found at the Bahay Kubo Food Truck – which will be at At Ease Brewing until 8:00 p.m.

Buddy Benches Promote Mental Health, Inclusion, and Friendship at 11 Local Schools

Today, Republic FC and Indomitable Partner Western Health Advantage announced a new initiative aimed at fostering friendship, inclusivity, and kindness throughout the Sacramento region. By the end of May – Mental Health Awareness Month – 11 schools will have a new Buddy Bench on their playground.

The benches are welcoming spaces where students, teachers, and parents can connect and have safe, open, and supportive conversations. The idea is simple: when a student sits on the bench, it signals to others that they are feeling lonely, left out, looking for someone to talk to, or play with. Classmates and educators are encouraged to invite these students to join in on their activities, ensuring that no one is excluded. Mental health among children is an important issue to address, and the Buddy Benches will provide schools with a new resource that gives educators an opportunity to address mental health with students, coworkers, and families alike.

“Buddy Benches aren’t just a place to sit and rest. They are an open invitation for kids to look out for each other,” said Republic FC Vice President of Community Investment Scott Moak. “At Sac Republic, we’re all about building connection and community, and this is one small but powerful way to help kids feel like they have someone who is there for them.”

“We are proud to build on our commitment to mental health awareness with this new initiative that will have a positive impact on thousands of students for years to come,” said Western Health Advantage CEO Garry Maisel.

The benches will also provide opportunities for teachers and school employees to observe and identify students who may need additional support. A 2023 report by the U.S. Surgeon General referred to loneliness as an “epidemic” in the country, with direct correlation to a variety of physical and mental health issues, including immune system changes, higher risks of heart disease and diabetes, and more. In children specifically, loneliness and social isolation have been linked to increased rates of depression and anxiety, both issues that have been proven to affect students’ emotional well-being and academic success.

“I feel so incredibly honored that our school is being considered for Republic FC’s Buddy Bench Program, especially given our strong commitment to mental health with our dedicated mental health specialists and restorative practices on campus,” said Michelle Crisp, Principal of Taylor Street Elementary School, which received one of the first benches on Monday. “This initiative aligns so beautifully with the culture we are building at Taylor — a place where every child feels seen, heard, supported, and valued. I truly believe the Buddy Bench will have a powerful impact on our students and community.”

A 12^th bench has been installed at Heart Health Park to serve as a designated space where Republic FC fans can engage with one another and encourage a sense of community. It is a space where longtime supporters can introduce themselves to first-time match attendees and where people who are there alone can find a new group of friends to enjoy the game with.

The Buddy Benches are the newest addition to Republic FC and Western Health Advantage’s shared commitment to promoting mental health awareness and destigmatizing conversations around suicide and mental health concerns. In 2023, the partners teamed up with WellSpace Health to add a patch to the team’s jerseys to drive awareness for 988, the National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Every time a Republic FC kit is seen, it serves as a reminder that help is just three digits away.

To kick off Mental Health Awareness Month, Republic FC and Western Health Advantage have launched a special t-shirt that promotes open conversations around mental health, inclusion, and self-confidence.

On the front, the phrase “Kick Those Negative Thoughts” is applied backward, creating an important message every time the wearer looks in the mirror: a reminder to focus on the positives in life. The back of the shirt emphasizes the importance of community and relationships when it comes to mental health. A 2023 study found that having at least one conversation with a friend per day can have a significant effect on a person’s mental health, significantly reducing feelings of stress, anxiety, and well-being, while also having a directly positive effect on overall mood and behavior.

Celebrate Sacramento’s Indomitable Spirit on Big Day of Giving

On May 1, team up with thousands of proud Sacramentans in giving back to the dedicated nonprofits that support our region. Coordinated by the Sacramento Region Community Foundation, the annual Big Day of Giving is a 24-hour give-a-thon that encourages local donors to support causes that matter to them and their loved ones.

Since 2013, more than 60,000 donors have helped hundreds of nonprofits in El Dorado, Placer, Sacramento, and Yolo counties raise over $100 million. In 2024 alone, 826 organizations raised $13.2 million — most from gifts under $50 — proving that small donations, when given together, make a big impact.

The majority of individual donations are between $15 and $50, demonstrating that no matter the size of the contribution, the community can make a big difference when it gives together. This year, donors are encouraged to celebrate the power of “+1s” by going just one step further in their Big Day of Giving donation. This includes giving to one new nonprofit, getting one friend to make a donation, making one gift in honor of a loved one, or even just giving one more dollar.

To help multiply the impact of individual gifts, dozens of local companies and philanthropists provide additional donations through prizes and match programs. Republic FC is sponsoring the “916 Prize.” At 9:16 a.m. and 9:16 p.m., two nonprofits will be randomly selected to receive a $916 prize (on top of any funds raised throughout the day).

Participants can use the Big Day of Giving to give to their favorite nonprofit or find new organizations based on causes, missions, demographics, and more.

May 1 also marks the beginning of Mental Health Awareness Month and to honor Republic FC’s commitment to bringing awareness suicide and mental health concerns, the club is encouraging fans and community members to donate to WellSpace Health’s campaign to support its 988 Crisis Center. For over 70 years, WellSpace has operated the region’s Suicide Prevention Hotline and is now the second largest 988 Crisis Center in California, answering nearly 100,000 calls, texts, and chats from individuals in crisis.

Republic FC and Wilton Rancheria Launch Inaugural Native American Heritage Scholarship

Ahead of the club’s annual Native American Heritage Night, Republic FC and Wilton Rancheria announced a new scholarship initiative that will support the educational aspirations of a local student. The club is expanding the Republic Rising Scholars series with a new $1,000 scholarship for a regional student of Native American descent. The application process for the 2025 Indigenous Future Leaders scholarship is open at SacRepublicFC.com/Scholarship and all entries must be completed by May 2.

“Creating opportunity and access to education is one of the most important steps we can take in supporting our youth. Lack of access to funding should never be the barrier that stops them from becoming the leaders, creators, and changemakers they want to be,” said Jesus Tarango, Chairman of Wilton Rancheria. “Our youth are our future, and they should feel empowered to dream big and pursue any path they choose. We’re honored to partner with Republic FC to help close the gaps and support their education goals.”

“We are proud to join Wilton Rancheria to launch a new scholarship in our annual series,” said Republic FC President and General Manager Todd Dunivant. “Empowering Indigenous students through education is not just an investment in individual aspirations, but it is also a commitment to honoring the heritage of those who have inhabited the Sacramento area for centuries, creating a more equitable future for our region, and building a stronger community for generations to come.”

California is home to 109 federally recognized tribes, the most in the contiguous United States, and has the largest Native American population in the nation, accounting for over 12 percent of the total Native American population. With over 26,000 American Indian (AI) K-12 students, California also has one of the largest AI student populations in the country. However, Native students face significant educational disparities, their college-going rate is about half that of their peers in other racial or ethnic groups, and only 42% graduate from college within six years, compared to 64% of all students, according to the Post-Secondary National Policy Institute. Native American K-12 students also significantly trail their peers in nearly every educational indicator. Nationally, American Indian and Alaska Native students experience a poverty rate 10 percent higher than the U.S. average, demonstrating the need for support through policy change, scholarships, and more.

To be eligible for the Indigenous Future Leaders scholarship, applicants must be of Native American descent and a resident of the six-county Sacramento region. They must also be enrolled at an eligible high school or in a minimum of six units at a California Community College, and intend to enroll in a four-year college or university, or a California Community College (minimum 12 units). Applications must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. on Friday, May 2. A special committee of Republic FC representatives and Native American leaders including Chairman Jesus Tarango and Chief Operating Officer Chris Franklin will select the grant winner.

In addition to the $1,000 grant, the scholarship recipient will get the VIP treatment and a special halftime recognition at Republic FC’s Native American Heritage Night match on Saturday, May 17. During the match, the club and Wilton Rancheria will showcase the different cultural traditions and heritage of the Indigenous People who have been the original stewards of the region for centuries. Fans will have the opportunity to shop in the pop-up makers market showcasing local, indigenous businesses. A new merch collection featuring the artwork of former Chairman Andrew Alejandre from the Paskenta Band of Nomlaki Indians will be available at the team’s retail locations. A limited-edition scarf developed by Alejandre will be given to the first 2,000 fans in attendance.

Last November, Republic FC and Wilton Rancheria leadership unveiled the plans for a new ownership group and to build a multi-use community stadium downtown that will serve as the home for the region’s pro soccer team. Republic FC Stadium at The Railyards will be the center of a 31-acre development that will become the next new Sacramento neighborhood and was once the home for the people of Wilton Rancheria, the original stewards of the region.

Republic FC will return to the pitch this Saturday, when the club travels to play Orange County SC. Kickoff from Championship Soccer Stadium in Irvine, California is at 7:00 p.m. and the match will be broadcast live on Antenna TV 40.2, as well as streaming on FOX40.com and ESPN+.
