Saturday will mark a special day for Republic FC when the Indomitable Club visits Oakland Roots SC for the first-ever time during USL Championship play. 

Not only will this be the first meeting between the two Northern California neighbors in the East Bay, but the match is also the inaugural home opener for Roots SC since joining the league. 

While Republic FC fans will either be glued to their televisions watching the fixture or making the trek to Oakland to watch in-person, there’s no shortage of additional USL action to keep an eye on over the weekend.

Last Friday, a late Cal Jennings strike from the penalty spot ensured Las Vegas Lights FC and San Antonio FC would share the spoils following a 1-1 result. 

The following day, a trio of Pacific Division matches took place as Orange County SC nabbed a 1-0 win at home over Oakland Roots SC, Tacoma Defiance was dealt a 3-0 loss at the hands of Phoenix Rising FC in Arizona and San Diego Loyal SC came back from a goal down at home to earn a 2-1 win over LA Galaxy II.

The 1-0 win over Indy Eleven on the road was the first win for the Steel City club in its last three matches. A win for Pittsburgh would see the side potentially leapfrog Charlotte and climb to within four points of Tampa Bay at the top of the table.

Tulsa claimed three straight wins to start the season before dropping all three of its most recent matches before a Wednesday night win over Sporting Kansas City II, 4-3. On May 19, Tulsa was trounced 5-0 by Atlanta United 2 before being dealt a 4-1 loss on the road against Sporting Kansas City II. In the days that followed, Legion handed Tulsa a 2-1 loss in Birmingham but the midwestern club has finally returned home for Wednesday’s fixture against Sporting Kansas City II that ended in a seven-goal thriller with Tulsa taking all three points.

Since the start of the 2021 USL Championship season, the Indomitable Club has celebrated the unique and diverse arts community in and around the greater Sacramento region and in conjunction with Arden Fair, both organizations are primed to present the Pride Month edition of this year’s Artist Spotlight series. 

The series began with Nooligan’s Opening Night poster followed Kris Rosa’s Quail poster to commemorate the first night the squad donned the Quail Kit. Now, the Artist Spotlight series rolls along with another talented local artist whose work will be auctioned off for local LGBTQ+ charities – Donco Tolomanoski. 

According to Donco’s website – where you can find more of the artist’s work at https://www.doncoart.com – “As an artist I find myself exploring the psyche and all the known and unknown parts of the human mind.  My collage pieces are an expression of my internal parts and spirit.  Each piece starts out naturally and evolves with time as I work through them almost like a puzzle. Placing all the components together until the result becomes finale, the story comes together, and my thoughts translate onto my mat board.  My pieces are all done by hand and are not digitally enhanced. The finalized piece is a photograph of the original collage printed on archival paper.”

Donco has previously designed Pride Month merchandise for the Republic FC Team Store. His original work that will be auctioned off has not been shown to the public just yet, but he did share with Connor Sutton on The Breakaway: A Republic FC Podcast, where he pulled his inspiration from. 

“My piece was inspired by kind of going back to happy times, which is the title of the piece,” he said. “And just kind of people just celebrating and living life and just expressing themselves and having a big party!”

The work, along with other beautiful pieces, will be showcased at Arden Fair and will be located inside the main plaza across from the elevator. The showcase will be available June 16-July 13 and additional information can be found by visiting here where supporters can bid on the one-of-a-kind pieces that are being auctioned off individually.

June 20 marks World Refugee Day and the Indomitable Club is inviting its fans to help highlight the issues facing refugees around the globe, and support a local organization that is working to provide those in need with help. 

Designated by the United Nations, World Refugee Day is an annual occasion to build empathy and understanding for the plight refugees face each day, and to celebrate the courage and strength that it takes a person to flee a place that they call home. It was held globally for the first time on June 20, 2001, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees. 

A refugee is someone who fled his or her home and country owing to “a well-founded fear of persecution because of his/her race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion”, according to the United Nations 1951 Refugee Convention. Many refugees are in exile to escape the effects of natural or human-made disasters.

This year, Republic FC has created a limited-edition World Refugee Scarf to help raise funds for World Relief Sacramento. Since 1989, World Relief Sacramento and its partners have welcomed over 30,000 refugees and immigrants in the Northern California area. 20% of each scarf sold will go directly to supporting World Relief Sacramento’s work in the region, helping refugees with resettlement and employment services, legal aid, and much more.

The utilization of the aesthetic brings a complexity to the scarf reminiscent of historical Indian Miniature work. 

On the back, “One World. One Game.” serves as a reminder that the world’s game is for everyone, and that it can serve as a bridge to lift up and help those in need.

The hybridization of “brown” sitters in Eurocentric spaces is an active reclamation of identity.”

Sacramento’s eight scoring chances bested Monarch’s seven with seven different SRFC players credited with creating opportunities. 

The Indomitable Club’s Dariusz Formella led the team with two chances created and the Polish playmaker was tied – alongside Pete Pennanen – for the most shots taken against Monarchs on the team with three. 

Republic FC also out possessed Monarchs – 63% to 37% – and had five different players log 60 or more touches while the Salt Lake City club had just one player with 60 or more touches.

Sacramento’s eight scoring chances bested Monarch’s seven with seven different SRFC players credited with creating opportunities.
