What’s the latest on the team?

Republic FC (14-14-6, 48 pts) are postseason-bound for the sixth straight season and begin their playoff push against New Mexico United on Wednesday night at Papa Murphy’s Park in a single elimination play-in game. 

If Simon Elliott’s men advance beyond the New Mexican club, a trip to second-seeded Reno 1868 on Saturday, October 26 at 5:30 p.m. PT is a lock. 

The boys in Old Glory Red finished the regular season in seventh place in the Western Conference standings following a 3-0 loss in Utah to Real Monarchs. Sacramento had the better goal scoring opportunities to open the match but strikes from Kalen Ryden, Luke Mulholland and Douglas Martinez ensured all three points were headed to the hosts. 

The recent loss shouldn’t cause any reason for concern, especially since over the last few weeks SRFC has responded positively when held scoreless in the previous match. Since late-July, four times has Republic FC been kept off the scoresheet but the boys in Old Glory Red responded well with three wins (netting 10 totals goals during that trio of matches), all of which were headlined by shutting out the opposition.

Even though Republic FC didn’t get the result they were hoping for against Monarchs, the Indomitable Club still finished the regular season with a tie for the third-best defense in the Western Conference after allowing only 43 goals all season. The boys in Old Glory Red also finished with the third-most clean sheets in the conference with 12 shutouts in league play.

New Mexico United (11-10-13, 46 pts) snagged the tenth and final postseason spot after blanking Las Vegas Lights 2-0 in Albuquerque over the weekend. Chris Wehan gave the hosts the lead in the 37th minute and a Devon Sandoval strike in the 87th sealed New Mexico’s fate in the 2019 USL Championship Playoffs. 

The hosts desperately needed the win over Eric Wynalda’s Las Vegas side on Saturday, given the victory for New Mexico was the first time in six matches that United earned all three points. The shutout was the first time since early-May that the New Mexican club kept a clean sheet. 

United, competing in their inaugural USL Championship campaign, are a possession-focused team that have completed the second-most passes in the conference (16,155) and the third-best passing accuracy rate of 82%. United also boasts an impressive shot conversion rate of 17%, tied for third-best in the West. 

New Mexico’s possession and precision passing results in plenty of goal scoring opportunities for the club from Albuquerque. Leading the team in goals with 14 is Kevaughn Frater who started the season red hot with 10 goals from 11 matches but his form has since faded as he’s currently experiencing a 10-game goalless drought. The last time these two clubs clashed was a 2-1 win for United at Papa Murphy’s Park back in late-July when an 89th minute Daniel Bruce strike was ultimately the difference in the match. Sam Werner equalized in the 75th minute after the visitors had taken an early lead in the 10th minute through Chris Wehan. 

When the boys in Old Glory Red traveled to Albuquerque, Simon Elliott’s men dealt United their first-ever loss at home following a 3-0 win in early-June. Cameron Iwasa, whose 16 goals this season is currently tied for sixth-best in all of the USL, bagged a brace and defender Matt Mahoney added another to round out the win for the visitors. 

New Mexico United has a pair of former Republic FC players including defender Justin Schmidt who made 17 starts with the Indomitable Club in 2018. United midfielder David Estrada made 18 appearances for Sacramento in 2015 and scored three goals during his time with the club.

Over the weekend, the boys in Old Glory Red fell to Orange County, 3-2, at Papa Murphy’s Park but this might not be the last time Sacramento goes head-to-head with the SoCal club this season. Simon Elliott’s men can finish anywhere from fifth to eighth and a postseason matchup against OCSC, or even Real Monarchs, isn’t entirely out of the question. 

In order to avoid the play-in game on October 23, Republic FC must beat Real Monarchs and either El Paso has to lose or draw to LA Galaxy II or Orange County has to lose to Fresno. If all three scenarios play out, the Indomitable Club will snag the fifth seed and travel to the fourth-place side next weekend, either Oct. 26 or 27. If SRFC loses or draws to Monarchs, Sacramento is a lock to host a Wednesday night play-in match and will finish seventh or eighth, depending on Austin’s result against Tacoma. 

As for the teams’ most recent result against Orange County, Republic FC struck first by way of a Cameron Iwasa goal that was set up perfectly by Thomas Enevoldsen who provided a flawless through ball to the Sacramento native in space. The visitors netted once in the first half and again in the second to take the lead before Iwasa provided a 64thminute equalizer, his 16thof the season which is currently fourth-best in the league. OCSC scored one late to escape Sacramento with all three points. 

Republic FC defender Juan Barahona, who was on international duty with the El Salvador Men’s National Team and missed the FC Juarez and OCSC matches, will be available for Saturday’s match in Utah. Barahona started both matches for El Salvador against Saint Lucia and Montserrat (both resulted in shutout victories). 

Sacramento’s postseason fate depends tremendously on Saturday’s result but the team currently does not have control over whether or not a win will be enough to avoid the play-in game. Once matches end on Saturday night between LA Galaxy II-El Paso, Tacoma-Austin and Orange County-Fresno, we’ll finally know exactly who Republic FC has next.

Monarchs, currently in possesion of the fourth and final playoff-hosting spot, is arguably the most dangerous team in the Western Conference at this current time given their piping hot run of form. But Saturday’s match will be the third game in one week for the Utahn club so tired legs might make an appearance for the home side late in the second half. 

Sandwiched between the Phoenix win and Saturday’s match against Republic FC was Monarchs most recent road trip to Texas where the Utahn club played out a 2-2 draw against playoff-bound Austin Bold FC. The visitors took the lead on two separate occasions but were unable to leave the Lone Star State with all three points. 

Leading the front line for Monarchs has been Douglas Martinez whose 15 goals (in only 21 appearances) and six assists are both a team-best. Maikel Chang is hot on his trail with 13 goals and five assists but leads the team in shots (57) and scoring chances created (69).

It was June of 2016 when Sacramento last beat Monarchs in Salt Lake City, but the boys in Old Glory Red have much more on the line this time around than just three points in the standings to play for. 

The last time these two clubs clashed resulted in a 1-1 draw at Papa Murphy’s Park to kickoff the 2019 USL Championship season back in early-March. The visitors took an early lead before defender Charalampos Chantzopoulos bagged a late equalizer with midfielder Sam Werner providing the assist.

What’s the latest on the team?

Republic FC (13-12-6, 45 pts) picked up a priceless point on Wednesday night following a dramatic come-from-behind 2-2 draw against LA Galaxy II at Papa Murphy’s Park. 

Forward Thomas Enevoldsen fired the hosts ahead in the 20th minute with a picturesque curling effort into the top far corner of the net. The goal was the Danish strikers seventh goal in nine games since joining the Indomitable Club in August from Indy Eleven. Los Dos managed to level the score through Ethan Zubak before the break and took their first lead of the match in the 72nd minute after a misfired shot happened to roll to a wide open Mohammed Kamara who kept his composure and netted an easy close-range attempt. But Simon Elliott’s men continued pushing forward and found their equalizer late in the 89th minute when Matt Mahoney guided a Mitchell Taintor header past the LA goalkeeper to complete the comeback and steal a point from Los Dos. 

Despite surrendering two goals to LA, Republic FC still boasts the third-best defense in the Western Conference with only 36 goals against during league play. In games that immediately followed a match where SRFC allowed two goals or more, the team has responded well and posts a 5-3-3 record on the year in all competitions. 

The result leaves the boys in Old Glory Red in sixth place with 45 points from 31 matches. If Sacramento can win out, the fourth and final playoff-hosting seed isn’t a guarantee but it’s still very much a possibility. Republic FC sits behind Austin Bold FC (5th, 46 pts) and Real Monarchs (4th, 46 pts) but has an away match on the final day against Monarchs that could ultimately determine the last remaining first-round home playoff game honor.

Tulsa Roughnecks FC (7-14-10, 31 pts) have endured something of a campaign to forget but at least the team can hold their hats on their recent run of success. After suffering through 18 straight games without a win, a run that lasted from late-April until late-August, the club from the Sooner State has been victorious in three of their last six games (3-1-2). 

The thorn in Tulsa’s side all season has been their defense, even at home. Roughnecks FC have surrendered the second-most goals in the Western Conference with 62 and since June 1, in five of their last nine home matches, Tulsa has allowed at least two goals or more (1-4-0) to the opposition. The Oklahoman club also has conceded the third-most fouls in the entire USL with 467.

While the defense has been a mess for most of the season, the Tulsa offense has been the lone bright spot at times. In their last home game, Roughnecks FC roughed up San Antonio FC 4-3 with an 87th minute Fredlin Mompremier strike sealing all three points for the hosts last Wednesday night. Anchoring the attack is Rodrigo da Costa whose team-leading 11 assists is the second-most in the USL and he also leads the team in goals with nine. The Brazilian playmaker’s 67 scoring chances created is currently third-most in the Western Conference. But the creative midfielder isn’t the only offensive threat on the Roughnecks FC roster as Luca Lobo and Cristhian Altamirano have both recorded seven scores this season.

After weather delays caused by torrential rain and hail, the boys in Old Glory Red took the early lead in the 14th minute through Thomas Enevoldsen. Not only did SRFC out possess Toros on the afternoon 59% to 41%, but the hosts finished with a 84.3% passing accuracy, their best this season in league play.

The assist was McCrary’s first of the season and first with the club. The hosts doubled their lead just before halftime when Enevoldsen played a perfect pass to Cameron Iwasa, who with his first touch at the top of the box, rifled a shot into the far corner of goal for the 2-0 lead. The goal was Iwasa’s team-high 13th of the season, elevating Sacramento’s all-time leading goal scorer up to a tie for sixth place in all of the USL Championship. Enevoldsen added the finishing touches in the 75th minute when Jaime Villarreal found Iwasa with a well-weighted through ball that the Sacramento native selflessly shared with an undefended Enevoldsen. The former Denmark international, whose stellar performance earned him USL Team of the Week honors for the second time since his midseason arrival, buried his shot into the top netting to put the game out of reach and guarantee all three points were headed to Sacramento. 

The clean sheet was the 11th of the regular season for Republic FC, now tied for second-best in the entire USL Championship, and 13th in all competitions. This was also the fourth time over the last seven matches that Sacramento shut out the opposition. The boys in Old Glory Red now boast the fourth-best defense in the Western Conference, having only surrendered 29 goals in league play all season. 

What about the other guys?

Austin Bold FC (11-9-7, 40 pts) came from behind over the weekend to draw 1-1 on the road with Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC. After falling behind in the first half, Gustavo Martini Rissi netted the equalizer in the 70th minute to return to Texas with a point in the standings and a firm hold on fourth place in the Western Conference. 

Austin has been hit or miss on the road this season but at home, the expansion side is a tough team to beat. In 14 home matches, Austin has only lost twice and the Texan club has scored eight goals over the last two matches (both wins). Spearheading the attack is forward Andre Lima who leads the team in goals with 10 and his 57 shots this season is currently tied for sixth in the conference. Republic FC (11-11-4, 37 pts) climbed the Western Conference standings up to seventh place and remained unbeaten at home in the all-time series against Tacoma Defiance (8-0-0) after shutting out the Pacific Northwest club, 3-0, at Papa Murphy’s Park on Saturday night. 

Simon Elliott’s men took the early advantage in the 13th minute when Jordan McCrary picked out an open Thomas Enevoldsen directly in front of goal and the newly-acquired strikercalmly directed his close-range shot past the Tacoma goalkeeper. The assist was McCrary’s first of the season and first with the club. The hosts doubled their lead just before halftime when Enevoldsen played a perfect pass to Cameron Iwasa, who with his first touch at the top of the box, rifled a shot into the far corner of goal for the 2-0 lead. The goal was Iwasa’s team-high 13th of the season, elevating Sacramento’s all-time leading goal scorer up to a tie for sixth place in all of the USL Championship. Enevoldsen added the finishing touches in the 75th minute when Jaime Villarreal found Iwasa with a well-weighted through ball that the Sacramento native selflessly shared with an undefended Enevoldsen. Cameron Iwasa lifted his goal tally on the year up to 10 in the 33rd minute when the Sacramento-native connected on a Drew Skundrich cross and powered a header past the San Antonio goalkeeper. It was the second consecutive season he’s hit double digits and the third time he’s done so during his SRFC career. On the cusp of halftime, Bonomo bagged his second brace of the season when the former New York Red Bulls forward tapped in a perfectly placed Juan Barahona cross. 

Three goals against the Texan club secured all three points and elevated Republic FC firmly back into the playoff picture with 30 points from 21 matches and into seventh place in the Western Conference based on a superior goal differential.

Sitting below Republic FC in Western Conference standings, but tied in points, Saturday’s matchup will have playoff implications as these teams will look for some separation in the race.

Forward Frank Lopez has scored nine goals in 2019, tied for tenth-most in the USL Championship along with Republic FC’s Cameron Iwasa. SAFC’s offensive production has come from various outlets in addition to Lopez, however, as four players on the roster have scored at least four goals this season. Defensively, San Antonio has been tough to crack with Matt Cardone beneath the sticks. The 26 year-old currently has the third-most saves in the entire league (31), which have contributed to San Antonio’s stellar record at home with just one loss at Toyota Field this season.

Head-to-Head

Saturday night’s match will be the seventh-ever meeting between Sacramento and San Antonio. The two sides are currently level across every aspect in the all-time series with two wins apiece and six goals scored by each team across their six previous encounters. The parity also extends to their current form, as both sides enter Saturday’s match with 27 points and with top scorers with nine goals apiece.

The last time the two met, Republic FC took care of business with a 2-1 win at Papa Murphy’s Park on June 1. They’ll be looking to repeat the feat and record their first-ever road win in the series on Saturday.
