Republic FC and Roberto Hategan Mutually Agree to Part Ways

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento Republic FC announced today the club has released forward Roberto Hategan following the termination of his contract by mutual consent.

“After several open discussions with Roberto and his family, we came to an agreement to mutually terminate his contract,” said Republic FC General Manager Todd Dunivant. “We would like to thank him for his contributions to the club and wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors.”

Hategan became Republic FC’s youngest player when he signed with the club at age 16 in July 2017 and was the first player from Republic FC’s Youth Academy to sign a professional contract with the club.

RECAP: Republic FC Advance to Third Round of the 2019 U.S. Open Cup with 1-0 Win Over Reno 1868 FC

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (May 15, 2019) — Sam Werner’s 83rd minute goal lifted Republic FC past Reno 1868 FC and into the Third Round of the 2019 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

Wednesday night’s rematch between the I-80 rivals was dominated not by the players on the pitch, but by an unseasonal and ceaseless downpour of rain throughout the 90 minutes that set the conditions for a hard-fought affair.

Republic FC finally broke the deadlock with under ten minutes to play thanks to their two Stanford Cardinal alumni. Drew Skundrich received a throw in and dummied a step to shake off his defender before squaring a ball across goal to an open Werner who kept his composure to coolly slot home the lone goal of the night.

The win marks the third consecutive year that Republic FC have eliminated their Nevadan rivals from the U.S. Open Cup.

Sacramento’s journey in the tournament will continue on Wednesday, May 29, when they will host Fresno FC in the Third Round of the U.S. Open Cup.

Republic FC Sign El Salvador Men’s National Team Defender Juan Barahona

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento Republic FC announced today the signing of defender Juan Barahona to a USL Championship contract for the remainder of the 2019 season with a club option for 2020, pending league and federation approval.

“Juan ticks a lot of boxes for us,” said Republic FC General Manager Todd Dunivant. “He is a proven winner, is naturally left-footed, defends well, loves to get forward, consistently scores from set pieces, and at only 23 years old, has a ton of professional experience. We think Juan is going to be a great addition to the club and look forward to his integration.”

Barahona joins Republic FC after spending all six years of his professional career with Santa Tecla in El Salvador’s first division. The 23-year-old defender, who primarily plays as a left back, won four league titles and two domestic cups during his time with the Central American club.

Born in the capital city of San Salvador, Barahona has 20 caps for the El Salvador Men’s National Team, including five World Cup qualifiers. The defender has also featured in the Concacaf Champions League with Santa Tecla.

Republic FC’s next home match is this Saturday, May 11, against regional rivals Reno 1868 FC. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and tickets to the match are available via Ticketmaster.com and the official Republic FC app.

“Juan cumple muchos requisitos para nosotros,” dijo Todd Dunivant, director deportivo de Republic FC. “Es un ganador comprobado, es naturalmente zurdo, defiende bien, le encanta avanzar, anota constantemente a balón parado, y con solo 23 años de edad tiene mucha experiencia profesional. Republic FC will Host Stanford University in Exhibition Match on Saturday

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (April 17, 2019) — Sacramento Republic FC will host the Stanford University Men’s Soccer Team in a friendly on Saturday, April 20, at American River College. The match, which is open to the public, will kick off at 4 p.m. and see current Republic FC players Sam Werner and Drew Skundrich take on their alma mater with whom they won three consecutive NCAA championships together from 2015-17.

“We’re looking forward to playing against the best college program in the nation over the past five years,” said Republic FC Head Coach Simon Elliott who played for the Stanford Cardinal from 1997-98. “It’s a great chance for our guys to show they’re ready to compete for places on the team and be prepared for the rest of the season.”

Tickets will be sold as general admission and be available at the door for $5; campus parking for the event is $2. All proceeds from Saturday’s match will be donated to ARC’s soccer program. The match is not included as part of the season ticket membership package.

Republic FC’s Second Round Matchup for 2019 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Announced

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (April 17, 2019) — U.S. Soccer announced today the Second Round matchups for the 2019 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, with Sacramento Republic FC set to host rivals Reno 1868 FC on May 15 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets will go on sale to the public on Monday, April 22. All tickets will be sold as general admission and will be priced at $12 for the public and $10 for season ticket members.

Founded in 1914, the U.S. Open Cup is the longest-running national cup competition in U.S. sports and the third-longest-running open soccer tournament in the world. The competition, which will feature 84 teams this year, is open to professional and amateur teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer. Last year, Republic FC made its furthest run in the Open Cup, defeating Major League Soccer’s Seattle Sounders FC en route to the Round of 16 where they nearly upset LAFC in a 3-2 loss at Banc of California Stadium.

For the first time in its history, every game of the 2019 U.S. Open Cup will be available for fans to watch on ESPN+.

Villyan Bijev’s Red Card Against Portland Timbers 2 Rescinded

TAMPA, Fla. (April 17, 2019) — Sacramento Republic FC midfielder Villyan Bijev has had his second yellow card which resulted in his sending off against the Portland Timbers 2 on April 13 rescinded following a review by USL’s Independent Review Panel. Bijev will be available for Republic FC’s next contest on April 27 against Phoenix Rising FC.

RECAP: Republic FC Fall 1-0 on the Road to Portland Timbers 2

PORTLAND, Ore. (April 13, 2019) — A shorthanded Sacramento Republic FC suffered their second loss of the season after Moudou Jadama’s first-half penalty gave Portland Timbers 2 a 1-0 win at home on a rainy Saturday evening.

Portland was awarded a penalty kick in the 28th minute following a hard cross from inside the box that struck Shannon Gomez point blank in the arm. Jadama stepped up to the spot and calmly slotted past Josh Cohen to score the lone goal of the match.

Republic FC were reduced to 10 men after Villyan Bijev received a second yellow card within 17 minutes of his second-half introduction. Bijev had previously been booked in the 57th minute for what referee Mike Hohnholz perceived was simulation in the box, despite clear contact on the midfielder from a Portland defender. Bijev then received his second booking of the evening six minutes later after making a tackle on Eryk Williamson.

The visitors were then brought down to nine men in stoppage time after second-half substitute Haris Chantzopoulos was booked twice within a span of 12 minutes for committing a pair of tactical fouls.

Despite the numerical disadvantage on the field, Republic FC limited Portland to a single shot on target—Jadama’s penalty kick—across 90 minutes. Sacramento has a bye next week and will look to bounce back from the frustrating result when they host Phoenix Rising FC on Saturday, April 27.
