Sacramento Republic FC forward Harry Williams made the USL Team of the Week Bench for his efforts on May 28 in Republic FC’s 1-1 draw against Swope Park Rangers. Williams maneuvered his way past the Rangers’ defense to send a perfect pass to Thomas Stewart who set up Cameron Iwasa for the match-tying goal in the 76th minute, just three minutes after Swope Park took an initial lead.
Williams has been a key figure in Republic FC’s offense since joining the club prior to the start of the 2016 season. The 20-year-old forward has brought creativity to the frontline, with his assist for Agustin Cazarez’s goal against Liverpool FC U21s on May 21 a prime example of his quick thinking in front of the goal.
Aside from his hand in Iwasa’s goal against the Rangers, Williams had several chances on goal, although he was unable to find the back of the net. His best chance on goal was in the 11th minute when Williams went one-on-one with Rangers keeper Zac Lubin. Williams skirted around the keeper, but he was bumped by a Rangers defender as he took a shot, causing the ball to go just wide of the goal.
In the 37th minute, Williams flicked a cross from Republic FC midfielder Daniel Trickett-Smith towards goal, but his attempt went straight to Swope Park Rangers goalkeeper Zac Lubin. Williams also played a perfectly timed through ball to midfielder Octavio Guzman who sent his shot past Lubin, but the goal was ruled offside.
So far this season, Williams has two goals and one assist in all competitions, including a match-tying goal in the dying minutes of Republic FC’s second friendly match against Liverpool FC U21s on May 25 in Reno, Nev.
“Harry is a young player that’s developing and you can see the signs are good,” said Republic FC Head Coach and Technical Director Paul Buckle. “He has a real knack of getting away from his man. Just when you think he’s going to be tied up and the ball is going to be taken off of him, he’s able wriggle through.”
Williams is joined in the USL honorable mentions for Week 10 by Mitch Hildebrandt (FC Cincinnati), Brett Levis (Vancouver Whitecaps FC), Ballou Jean-Yves Tabla (FC Montreal), Jose Escalante (Rio Grande Valley FC Toros), Andrew Weideman (FC Cincinnati) and Villyan Bijev (Portland Timbers 2).
