Republic FC picks up a hard-fought three points and its second consecutive clean sheet in a 1-0 win over Lexington SC on Saturday night. It was a gritty affair on both sides, with neither team recording a shot on target until Kyle Edwards capitalized on a set piece late in the match. Edwards ties the league’s record for goals by a substitute with his 18th strike across his career – and now leads the Indomitable Club with eight goals across all competitions. Edwards’ game winner picks up the first win for either side in the 4th matchup all time.
Lexington managed to get forward a few times in the opening minutes, but nothing resulted in a shot on target. Danny Vitiello would be called into action in the 22nd minute when Lexington connected for a 1-2 near the top of the box that resulted in a too-heavy touch that called Vitiello into action.
Republic FC got the crowd into it with a couple of close chances in the 30th minute. Memo Rodriguez switched the ball to a wide-open Mayele Malango on the left flank. A tough bounce forced Malango to attempt to chip the keeper. A defender got back to the goal line to clear the ball away, but the attempt didn’t get far as Jack Gurr stuck his foot in for a shot inside the six-yard box that was ultimately deflected out for a corner.
Another close chance came in the 43rd minute. Blake Willey and Jack Gurr connected to escape pressure and Gurr fired off a curling cross to Malango on the back post. But with the defender closing down, Malango was unable to get a firm enough touch on the ball to get it past the keeper.
The Indomitable Club came out of the break determined to control the match. Through the second half, the Quails maintained nearly 65% of the possession and completed nearly twice as many passes. The pressure built to one critical moment in the 87th minute.
Memo Rodriguez sent a corner kick into the box. Jared Timmer flicked the ball to the far post, where Kyle Edwards timed his run perfectly to tap the ball past the goalkeeper. Edwards, who leads the team with eight goals, is now tied for the USL Championship’s all-time record with 18 career goals as a substitute.
Republic FC’s stalwart defense held Lexington without a single shot on target, giving Sacramento its seventh clean sheet of the season.
