Playing in front of a home crowd of over 10,000 fans, Republic FC claimed a big three points in a 1-0 win over Eastern Conference powerhouse Detroit City FC on Saturday night. Playing against the league’s top defense this season, the Indomitable Club struck early, scoring on a set piece for the second game in a row as Jack Gurr assisted Jared Timmer in the 14th minute. Sacramento claims its eighth clean sheet of the season and now moves up into a tie for fourth place in the table.
After controlling the majority of the possession in the opening minutes, Republic FC found the back of the net in the 14th minute. Memo Rodriguez put a long corner kick across the box to Jack Gurr at the far side. Gurr quickly brought the ball down and delivered a perfect cross to Jared Timmer for a flick header to the back of the net.
A free kick gave Detroit City their first chance of the night in the 21st minute. Just outside of the 18-yard box, Kobe Hernandez-Foster put a shot underneath the wall, but Danny Vitiello followed the ball the whole way through and went low to make the block. The play would mark Detroit’s one and only shot on target in the match.
Making his first start for the Indomitable Club, midseason addition Alfredo Midence nearly opened his scoring account in the 28th minute. Danny Crisostomo broke the line with a pass to Cal Jennings, who laid the ball off for Midence. He got the ball on his left foot and fired off a shot that was heading toward the upper 90, forcing Detroit goalkeeper Carlos Herrera to go all out for a diving save.
Herrera would come up big again for his team in the 41st minute. Surrounded by four defenders, Alfredo Midence laid the ball off to Jack Gurr on the right flank. Gurr’s cross reached Cal Jennings, who lofted a header that nearly chipped Herrera, but the keeper reacted quickly enough to push the ball over the crossbar.
Jennings would give it a go on the other side of the break. Pep Cases drove the ball forward to force a tackle by Detroit’s centerback. The ball didn’t go far as Jennings controlled and quickly sent a shot towards goal, but the attempt went wide. Another chance came in the 59th minute. Mayele Malango used his speed and footwork to beat his defender on the left flank and put a ball across the box. Jack Gurr collected it on the far side and put a pass back to Cal Jennings, for a shot that trickled just wide.
Sacramento’s pressure continued as the game went on and The Quails nearly doubled their lead in the 81st minute. Freddy Kleemann squeezed an outlet pass past a Detroit City player to Jack Gurr, who connected with Blake Willey for a one-two combination that set Gurr up for a cross that eventually fell to Memo Rodriguez. Memo fired off a low, dangerous shot that forced Christian Herrera to make another save. In the 83rd, Memo put a ball across the box for a Danny Crisostomo shot that nutmegged a defender before the goalkeeper collected.
As time wound down and Detroit City began throwing numbers forward, they had what looked to be a dangerous chance in the first minute of stoppage time. The ball fell to Maxi Rodriguez who went for a one-touch volley off the bounce, but Jared Timmer came up big with a crucial block that thwarted the danger.
